Bipedal locomotion training and performance evaluation device and method

A bipedal locomotion exercise and performance evaluation apparatus including a revolving belt, a harness for securing the position of a subject on the belt, a harness-force measuring means, and a belt volocity monitoring and controlling means. The harness may be secured on various points of a subject and includes push / pull engagement means. An overhead harness may be used to reduce effective body mass. The velocity of the belt may be controlled by a unidirectional or bidirectional motor / brake system. Velocity of the belt may also be controlled by a brake only. A digital processor may be used to control the motor and / or brake as a function of the forces applied allowing multiple operating modes. Recording of velocity and force as functions of time facilitates analysis of exercise performance. The apparatus allows exertions throughout the first quadrant of a force-velocity-duration space, and outside that first quadrant.

Sports Training Simulation System and Associated Methods

A simulation system for training athletes in cognitive skills includes hardware incorporating imaging and tracking devices, sound generator and receiver, a projection screen, and a movie projector for creating a virtual environment that simulates the site specific to the sport. The system includes software installed on a processor that is in signal communication and in controlling relation to the hardware elements. The system inputs to the software a plurality of scenarios in which the athlete might find him / herself. The software acts to retrieve a scenario and output a plurality of control signals for presenting a visual and aural simulation. A body parameter is tracked in temporal coordination with elements of the scenario. The tracked parameter is saved for later review by the user and, in some cases, training personnel. The scenario evolves in response to the tracked parameter, and is thus interactive in nature.

Virtual reality sports training systems and methods

Virtual and augmented reality sports training environments are disclosed. A user interacts with virtual players in a simulated environment of a virtual reality sporting event. In some embodiments, the user's actions and decisions are monitored by the simulated environment. The environment evaluates the user's performance, and provides quantitative scoring based on the user's decisions and timing. Coaches and other users may design customized scenarios or plays to train and test users, and the resultant scores may be reviewed by the coach. In one application, real life pitchers and their pitching data are tracked and replicated in a simulated pitching environment. A team of users may practice against a simulation of a pitcher they are about to compete against, swinging at pitches that they would see in a real game. Such environments may maximize effective practice time for users, and help develop better players with improved decision-making skills.

Sports training system and sports video game

A sports training system for monitoring and comparing a golfer's swing to a desired norm or standard at the point of impact of a golf ball, so as to thereby detect deviation (e.g., hook or slice) from such desired norm or standard. The system of this invention is capable of permitting the golfer to refine his swing by display of the relative position of the club face and ball at point of impact, club angle at impact and the club speed at impact. Thus, the golfer is able to adjust one or more of these variables at a time and detennine the likely result or effect upon the other(s).

Method to Provide Feedback to a Physical Therapy Patient or Athlete

A process is disclosed to visually capture a person doing a set of steps for an exercise, and then to compare that person during exercise to those steps, measuring the results. Each exercise is tailored to the individual patient, rather than to an “ideal” or “generic” standard. This flexibility allows a physical therapist to optimize treatment for patients progressively, and / or to accommodate multiple physical problems in one patient. This invention can be used as a medical software product under the guidance of a physical therapist for rehabilitation exercises. It may alternatively be used as a fitness or sports training device under the guidance of a trainer or coach. By providing visual data and tracking results, it enhances communication between the physical therapist and the patient (or trainer and athlete), and optionally, the physician.

Gait recognition method based on inertial sensor

The invention belongs to the field of the body area network and relates to a gait recognition method based on an inertial sensor. The method includes four phases. In the data acquisition phase, four sensor nodes attached to legs of a testee and a sensor node attached to the waist of the testee are used to acquire motion angular speeds, accelerations and magnetic field strengths of the legs and waist of the body of the testee and wirelessly transmit data to a base station, and then the data are transmitted to the upper computer for processing. In the period dividing phase, gait periods are divided according to angular speed change curves of the shanks so as to obtain segment data corresponding to gaits. In the feature extraction phase, waveform features and behavioral features are extracted from the segment data and used to describe fluctuation of sensor signals and sport performance of gait behaviors. In the gait classification phase, the gait features are transmitted to a classifying model, types of the gaits are acquired by computing, and thus gait recognition is achieved. The method is suitable for use in gait recognition in the fields, such as sports training, medical care and game design.

An apparatus is provided that allows individuals of diverse skill levels to improve their respective sports-related swings. The apparatus provides visual, auditory and tactile feedback as to whether an individual is correctly “loading”, “retaining”, and “releasing” the inherent power of the training apparatus. The training apparatus enables an individual to fine tune his / her swing to maximize power delivery, e.g., in driving a golf ball, striking a hockey puck, or hitting a baseball. A slidable member is provided that moves along a shaft between an upper member and a lower member. A retaining mechanism restrains the slidable member in a cocked position, i.e., in juxtaposition with the upper member, until a predetermined force is created through swinging of the shaft.

Ball having unpredictable bounce

The invention pertains to a sports training ball designed to develop reaction and reflex skills, while keeping interest and enthusiasm high among the participants due to the unpredictable bounces the seven-knob rubber ball creates. It is well suited for training in many sports including baseball and is effective to help young athletes develop their visual tracking skills, reaction skills, and catching skills. Its unique seven-knob design ensures a different bounce every time it bounces against a flat surface. The seven-knob design includes two identical knobs of a larger size and five identical knobs of a smaller size and the ball is approximately the same mass as a tennis ball and a baseball. In short, it is challenging, but allows children of varying ages and skill levels to achieve success while building their skills.

Random rebound practice device

A random rebound sports training device is provided which includes a pair of misaligned or offset net structures disposed on a frame that enable a projectile striking the net structures to rebound in a random manner. The structures are secured to a support frame such that the openings formed in the net structure, which are larger than normally utilized, are offset from one another. The offset of each of the net structures greatly reduces the potential for a projectile striking the device from contacting the same portions of the net structures, thereby causing the projectile to rebound in a random manner from the device. The frame on which the net structures are mounted can be easily configured between a use configuration and a storage configuration. Further, each of the net structures can be secured to a single support frame, or can extend from separate frames onto a target frame to provide multiple use sections on the device.
