Methods and apparatus for targeted sound detection and characterization

Targeted sound detection methods and apparatus are disclosed. A microphone array has two or more microphones M0 . . . MM. Each microphone is coupled to a plurality of filters. The filters are configured to filter input signals corresponding to sounds detected by the microphones thereby generating a filtered output. One or more sets of filter parameters for the plurality of filters are pre-calibrated to determine one or more corresponding pre-calibrated listening zones. Each set of filter parameters is selected to detect portions of the input signals corresponding to sounds originating within a given listening zone and filter out sounds originating outside the given listening zone. A particular pre-calibrated listening zone is selected at a runtime by applying to the plurality of filters a set of filter coefficients corresponding to the particular pre-calibrated listening zone. As a result, the microphone array may detect sounds originating within the particular listening sector and filter out sounds originating outside the particular listening zone. Sounds are detected with the microphone array. A particular listening zone containing a source of the sound is identified. The sound or the source of the sound is characterized and the sound is emphasized or filtered out depending on how the sound is characterized.

Method and Apparatus for In-Vehicle Presence Detection and Driver Alerting

A method for alerting a driver of an automotive vehicle (or other responsible party) to the presence or inferred presence of an object, a person, or a pet animal in rear seating rows of the vehicle. The open / closed condition of rear vehicle doors is monitored to determine whether the driver may have placed an object, child, or pet in the rear seating rows prior to the start of a drive-cycle, and an alert is generated at the end of the drive-cycle to remind the driver to check the rear seat. Sound detection and analysis may also be used to identify sounds characteristic of a human (a young child, for example) or a non-human animal (a pet, for example) and thereby verify that a child or pet is present.

Active noise control system

An active noise control system prevents a continuous muffled sound from being generated as an abnormal sound under a high sound pressure from a speaker when a microphone as a sound detector is covered, and reduces noise immediately when the microphone is uncovered. A first threshold value as an upper limit value and a second threshold value as a lower limit value are provided for the filter coefficient of an adaptive notch filter. When the filter coefficient is greater than the first threshold value, a control sound is faded out according to a forgetting process. When the filter coefficient is smaller than the second threshold value, an adaptive control process is resumed. Even if the microphone is covered, the filter coefficient does not exceed the first threshold value as the upper limit value.

Sound judging device, sound sensing device, and sound judging method

A sound determination device (100) includes: an FFT unit (2402) which receives a mixed sound including a to-be-extracted sound and a noise, and obtains a frequency signal of the mixed sound for each of a plurality of times included in a predetermined duration; and a to-be-extracted sound determination unit (101 (j)) which determines, when the number of the frequency signals at the plurality of times included in the predetermined duration is equal to or larger than a first threshold value and a phase distance between the frequency signals out of the frequency signals at the plurality of times is equal to or smaller than a second threshold value, each of the frequency signals with the phase distance as a frequency signal of the to-be-extracted sound. The phase distance is a distance between phases of the frequency signals when a phase of a frequency signal at a time t is psi (t) (radian) and the phase is represented by psi' (t) = mod 2 pi (psi (t) - 2 pi f t) (where f is an analysis-target frequency).

Personal alerting device and method

A personal alerting device and method for detecting an approaching sound source includes a sound detector for detecting environmental sounds and for providing an electrical signal to a sound analyzer. The sound signal is analyzed to determine a baseline sound pattern comprising a plurality of distinct sounds corresponding to sounds emitted from a reference sound source. The distinct sounds in the baseline sound pattern may have substantially the same amplitude and time interval. The sound signal is monitored and compared against the baseline sound pattern to determine whether a target sound pattern is present in the sound signal, the target sound pattern corresponding to sounds emitted by the approaching sound source. When it is determined that the target sound is present in the sound signal, one or more of an audible, visual and tactile alert may be emitted to provide warning of the approaching sound source.

Method and device for media editing

The present media editing device generates media including messages in an easy manner in a communication terminal such as a mobile terminal. Therein, a moving image data storage part stores moving image data recorded by a user. A region extraction part extracts any region including the user from the moving image data. A front determination part detects whether or not the user in the extracted region is facing the front. A sound detection part detects the presence or absence of a sound signal of a predetermined level or higher. A frame selection part determines starting and ending frames based on the results outputted from the front determination part and the sound detection part. An editing part performs, for example, an image conversion process by clipping out the media based on thus determined starting and ending frames. A transmission data storage part stores the resultantly edited media as transmission data.

Sound Detection Method for Recognizing Hazard Situation

A method of detecting a particular abnormal sound in an environment with background noise is provided. The method includes acquiring a sound from a microphone, separating abnormal sounds from the input sound based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), extracting Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) parameters according to the separated abnormal sounds, calculating hidden Markov model (HMM) likelihoods according to the separated abnormal sounds, and comparing the likelihoods of the separated abnormal sounds with a reference value to determine whether or not an abnormal sound has occurred. According to the method, based on NMF, a sound to be detected is compared with ambient noise in a one-to-one basis and classified so that the sound may be stably detected even in an actual environment with multiple noises.

Ventilation sound detection system

A ventilation sound detection system includes an audible display that emits a series of sounds based upon information provided by a ventilator. In particular, there are two different sound patterns emitted by the system. One sound represents inspiration and the other sound represents expiration. The inspiration sound is enunciated when monitored breathing pressure crosses a threshold level, thereby communicating to an anesthesiologist / clinician that a significant pressure has been developed in the breathing circuit (e.g., a proper inspiration breath has been taken by the patient). The exhalation sound is enunciated when the rising edge of a valid CO2 breath has been returned to the breathing circuit (e.g., a proper exhalation breath has been made). Accordingly, the system provides the anesthesiologist / clinician with a new way of verifying that the patient is being properly ventilated. Therefore, ventilation changes or problems can be identified quickly and effectively.

Apparatus for communication and reconnaissance coupled with protection of the auditory system

A method and apparatus are disclosed for listening to ambient sounds, engage in face-to-face communication, listen to and transmit voice communications, while also protecting the auditory system from hazardous sound pressure levels. Increased gain permits the user to maximize his sound detection ability during “reconnaissance and sentry” activities, thereby increasing the user's ability to detect and localize low level sounds such as, for example, enemy movement or activity. The throughput of the system is linear creating high fidelity of sound until the output level for a particular setting of the final gain reaches the limits established by the power supply. At that point, the output reaches a hard limit. This supply voltage also limits the output to the ear for any instantaneous increase in sound pressure levels. The invention includes barriers to attenuate ambient sounds from entering the ear canal and means for providing sound to the occluded portion of the ear canal. Therefore, hazardous impact noise (e.g., weapons blast, small arms fire, etc.) does not pass through the invention while ambient sounds and conversation are received at a level suitable for the auditory system.
