Protection of output stage transistor of an RF power amplifier

A protection method may prevent a load-mismatch-induced failure in solid-state power amplifiers. In an RF power amplifier, the load voltage standing-wave ratio results in very high voltage peaks at the collector of the final stage and may eventually lead to permanent failure of the power transistor due to avalanche breakdown. The method avoids breakdown by attenuating the input power to the final stage during overvoltage conditions, thus limiting the output collector swing. This is accomplished by a feedback control system, which detects the peak voltage at the output collector node and clamps its value to a given threshold by varying the circuit gain. Indeed, the control loop is unlocked in the nominal condition and it acts when an output mismatching condition is detected. A control circuit also allows a supply-independent collector-clamping threshold to be accurately set.

In a more specific embodiment, the crystal (30, 50) is a sapphire crystal (30, 50) having a crystallographic structure that includes positive n-planes (12), positive r-planes (14), and a c-plane (16). By design at nominal conditions, an r-plane (14) is approximately bisected by a plane formed by the normal of the c-plane (16) and a wind flow vector (36) parallel to a thrust vector of said missile (32). A turntable (not shown) orients the sensor dome (50) so that a first r-plane (14) faces leeward of impinging airflow (36) corresponding to the wind flow vector (36). An r-plane normal (38) of a second r-plane forms an angle of approximately 60 degrees with respect to impinging airflow (36) that is approximately parallel to the thrust vector of the missile (32). The turntable includes a motor (not shown) for strategically orienting the lattice planes (12, 14, 16) of the dome (50) so as to maximize the strength of the dome (50) with respect to applied stresses.

Protection of output stage transistor of an RF power amplifier

A protection method may prevent a load-mismatch-induced failure in solid-state power amplifiers. In an RF power amplifier, the load voltage standing-wave ratio results in very high voltage peaks at the collector of the final stage and may eventually lead to permanent failure of the power transistor due to avalanche breakdown. A system and method for fault detection is provided. The fault detection system provides the ability to detect symptoms of fault in turbine engines and other mechanical systems that have nonlinear relationships between two or more variables. The fault detection system uses a neural network to perform feature extraction from data for representation of faulty or normal conditions. The values of extracted features, referred to herein as scores, are then used to determine the likelihood of fault in the system. Specifically, the lower order scores, referred to herein as “approximate null space” scores can be classified into one or more clusters, where some clusters represent types of faults in the turbine engine. Classification based on the approximate null space scores provides the ability to classify faulty or nominal conditions that could not be reliably classified using higher order scores.
