A measuring device for providing data corresponding to a geometric configuration in space, in the form of a flexible, compliant, measurement member capable of bending in at least one degree of freedom and extending along a medial axis or plane. The member has spaced flexure sensors distributed at known locations on the member and separated by known sensor spacing intervals to provide flexure signals indicating the local state of flexure present at the locations. The member comprises a multiplicity of formed, i.e. shaped, fibers, these fibers including sensing fibers having sensing portions which provide the flexure sensors, the sensing portions of different fibers being located at differing distances along the member so as to be located at the sensor spacing intervals, the formed fibers being in mutually supporting relationship, as by continuous or repeated contact with each other. Such fibers may constitute most or all of the member.

Human motion capture device

The invention relates to a human motion capture device which comprises motion measuring units, a motion parameter estimation unit, an initialization unit, a display estimation unit and an overall integration unit; the motion measuring units are attached on all the limbs of a human body and are used for measuring the motion data and the environmental data of all the limbs; the motion parameter estimation unit deducts the motion parameters and the environmental parameters of all the limbs, and when in deduction, a self-adaptive anti-interference three-dimensional angle estimation method is adopted to deduct the three-dimensional angle values of all the limbs; the initialization unit is used for receiving and integrating the motion parameters and the environmental parameters of all the limbs, and deducting the initial operation parameters of the human body motion capture device; the displacement estimation unit is used for receiving and integrating the motion parameters and the environmental parameters of all the limbs as well as the initial operation parameters of the human body motion capture device, and deducing the displacement of the human body relative to the ground; and the parameters and the displacement of the human body relative to the ground are finally integrated together by the overall integration unit, so that the position and the gesture of the overall motion of the human body are worked out and output.

Bidirectional rotary motion-converter, wave motors, and various other applications thereof

Motion-converter apparatus for converting bidirectional rotary movements to unidirectional rotary movements includes: an input shaft for inputting the bidirectional rotary movements; an output shaft for outputting the unidirectional rotary movements, the output shaft having a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the input shaft; a drive bevel gear coaxial with, and driven bidirectionally by, the input shaft; a pair of driven bevel gears coaxial with the output shaft and meshing with the drive bevel gear on opposite sides of the axis of the drive bevel gear so as to be driven bidirectionally thereby but in opposite directions with respect to the output shaft; and a pair of one-way clutches coupling the driven bevel gears to the output shaft such that both one-way clutches are effective to drive the output shaft only in one direction. Various applications of such apparatus are also described, including wave and tide motors, wind turbines and bidirectional-movement measuring devices.

System and methods for monitoring physical therapy and rehabilitation of joints

A system for monitoring a patient includes a sensor unit having a housing and sensors disposed in or around the housing; and a base having a shell and configured and arranged to be adhesively attached to skin of the patient. The sensors can be used to monitor physical therapy and rehabilitation of the patient. The sensor unit can provide information to a patient or clinician device to facilitate the monitoring. The sensor data can be used to determine measurements such as tilt angle of the sensor unit and range of motion measurements (such as extension, flexion, or forces associated with movement) of the anatomical region to which the sensor unit is attached. The sensor data can also be used for automated identification or classification of exercises performed by the patient.
