Method and system for categorizing and processing e-mails

An e-mail filtering method and system that categorize received e-mail messages based on information about the sender. Data about the sender is contained in the message and is used to identify the actual sender of the message using a signature combining pieces of information from the message header or derived from information in the message header. This and other information about the message is then sent by each member of an e-mail network to one or more central databases (in one embodiment, the information will also be stored at a database associated with the recipient's e-mail program and filtering software) which stores the information and compiles statistics about e-mails sent by the sender to indicate the likelihood that the e-mail is unsolicited and determine the reputation of the sender (a good reputation indicates the sender does not send unwanted messages while a bad reputation indicates the sender sends unsolicited e-mail messages). Information from the central database is then sent to recipients in order to determine the likelihood that a received e-mail message is spam (information may also be obtained from the local database associated with the recipient's e-mail program and filtering software).

Red-eye filter method and apparatus

A digital image acquisition system having no photographic film, such as a digital camera, has a flash unit for providing illumination during image capture and a red-eye filter for detecting a region within a captured image indicative of a red-eye phenomenon, the detection being based upon a comparison of the captured image and a reference image of nominally the same scene taken without flash. In the embodiment the reference image is a preview image of lower pixel resolution than the captured image, the filter matching the pixel resolutions of the captured and reference images by up-sampling the preview image and / or sub-sampling the captured image. The filter also aligns at least portions of the captured image and reference image prior to comparison to allow for, e.g. movement in the subject.

Email filtering methods and systems

Various embodiments of the invention address two critical problems that current email service providers face. First, there is the problem of maintaining high levels of customer service when email server systems are inundated with spam. Second, there is the problem of reducing the system-wide impact that spam has on the email delivery system. Current embodiments are directed to determining whether an email message is an unwanted bulk email message without necessarily considering the message that is conveyed by any portion of the email message. Through analyses of patterns of delivery of these email messages, profiles are built that allow an email server to ascertain whether there is a likelihood that any one particular email message constitutes an unwanted email message. If an email message is determined to likely constitute an unwanted email message, then memory-saving measures are implemented. In preferred embodiments, one copy of the email message is saved at a central, shared location that can be accessed by each of the intended recipients. This avoids having to replicate the email message across the system for each of the recipients.

Message and user attributes in a message filtering method and system

A method and system for filtering messages where the importance of a message is determined by analyzing the message body in conjunction with message attributes. Message body refers to the text in the body of the message, whereas message attributes convey information about the message. In another embodiment, analysis of the user's current computing environment provides additional input to the filtering system. This allows for preferentially weighting messages of user's current interests. Analysis includes computation of feature vectors and subsequent input to a discriminant function. The discriminant function provides a test statistic which is compared to a threshold. If the test statistic exceeds the threshold, the incoming message is passed by the filtering system and may be displayed to the user. In another embodiment, message body and attributes are used to anticipate significant events in a time series, such as streaming financial data.

E-mail system providing filtering methodology on a per-domain basis

An e-mail system is described that includes a flow control filter, which is particularly suited for filtering on a per-domain (host) basis. During processing of incoming e-mail, each child MTA process created to handle a particular new connection connects to a flow control filter service, so that it can interact with the service during arrival of a message. This interaction provides a complete description of the incoming client, including IP address and host name, as well as the complete SMTP interaction. Since the flow control filter service monitors all children processes, it attains a global view of traffic flowing through the system. By virtue of its global view, the flow control filter service can track information on a per domain basis, including total volume of e-mail received from a particular domain over a given period of time. Since the knowledge lost by the forking process is captured by the flow control filter service, the service is in a position to enforce policy-based rules, including placing restrictions on child processes, based on the per-domain tallies encountered.

Matched filter, filtering method and digital broadcast receiver using the same

A digital passband matched filter is automatically adapted to a carrier wave ω in accordance with a frequency offset of the carrier wave, to obtain a passband digital signal having no frequency distortion due to the frequency offset. Thus, a receiver in which drawbacks such as decrease of SNR and increase of circuit complexity caused by the fixed baseband / passband matched filter is obtained. Since a cosine wave generating section operates in a carrier wave frequency restoring mode and a carrier wave frequency adaptive mode, respectively, a single cosine wave ROM table can be used regardless of the respective operating modes, thereby reducing circuit complexity. Since the digital passband matched filter acts to renew the filter coefficients adapted to the carrier wave adaptive mode only, power consumption required to operate the filter can be minimized.
