Indirect measurement of tissue analytes through tissue properties

Methods and system for noninvasive determination of tissue analytes utilize tissue properties as reflected in key features of an analytical signal to improve measurement accuracy and precision. Physiological conditions such as changes in water distribution among tissue compartments lead to complex alterations in the measured analytical signal of skin, leading to a biased noninvasive analyte measurement. Changes in the tissue properties are detected by identifying key features in the analytical signal responsive to physiological variations. Conditions not conducive to the noninvasive measurement are detected. Noninvasive measurements that are biased by physiological changes in tissue are compensated. In an alternate embodiment, the analyte is measured indirectly based on natural physiological response of tissue to changes in analyte concentration. A system capable of such measurements is provided.

Determination of the anesthetic state of a patient

The invention relates to the determination of the anesthetic state of a patient. In order to achieve a mechanism that enables establishment and maintenance of balanced anesthesia, values are established for a set of diagnostic indices. The set includes at least two diagnostic indices of which a first diagnostic index is indicative of the level of hypnosis and a second diagnostic index of the level of nociception in the patient. The combination of the at least two index values obtained is employed for indicating the anesthetic state of the patient. The combination of the at least two index values may further be employed to control the administration of drugs to the patient.

Wireless communication apparatus, wireless communication network and software upgrading method

Software in a base station is upgraded during a communication service. A base station control portion selects one or multiple signals in accordance with the state of radio waves from signals received through multiple definable communication paths. A wireless communication apparatus communicates with a wireless terminal and a wired communication network at multiple frequencies. In response to a request for software upgrading from a network management device, the wireless communication apparatus selects one frequency, controls the state of transmission waves of a wireless interface such that a communication path in which a communication service is being provided at the frequency can be switched to another communication network without instantaneous interruption, rewrites software defined for each wireless interface out of communication service to software received through a wired interface in advance, and returns the state of transmission waves of the wireless interface. Thus, the software can be upgraded without blackouts of the communication service to the wireless terminal.

Consolidated Online Assessment System

A Consolidated Online Assessment System (COLA System) that creates, manipulates, and distributes an objected-oriented paradigm that represents the scoring and related activities as a unified and integrated family of loosely coupled objects, most notably a “Case” representing a state-machine that replaces the constructed response from the test taker as the unit of work. The Scoring Model and associated Properties that encapsulate the business rules associated with what actions are appropriate or required for a unit of work and the Responses to the unit of work which represent the test-taker-contributed content (e.g., essays or other text-based responses, audio responses, digitized video responses, scanned images, diagrams, lessons plans, etc.) and ties that content to its creator are linked to a Distinct Scorable Unit (DSU) which represents a tree-based mechanism that connects and provides inheritability for the other primary system objects. The abstraction of the DSU allows the system to distinguish between the constructed response as test-taker contributed content and the constructed response as the carrier of state or status information as it passes through the assessment process.
