The invention relates to a real-time infrared target detection system and method based on FPGA, belonging to the infrared real-time monitoring field, the system comprising an infrared camera device, atwo-dimensional servo head, a display and an upper computer. The infrared camera device is used for collecting infrared images and processing the infrared images into image data which can be transmitted. A FPGA module is communicatively connected with the infrared camera device. The FPGA module receives image data and extracts infrared target position and shape information in a parallel processing mode; the upper computer receives and stores the information of infrared target position and shape in real time. The invention solves the problems in the prior art that the performance of DSP and FPGA is greatly wasted when DSP and FPGA are combined to deal with real-time infrared target detection, and the problem of low efficiency of infrared target detection is caused by DSP and FPGA transmission and DSP sequential processing. The invention reduces the use of DSP chip, realizes the function of original DSP in FPGA chip, and improves the efficiency of operation by using the characteristic of parallel processing in FPGA.
