A user interface having changeable topography is disclosed. The user interface can have a shape changeable surface that can selectively alter according to an input so as to provide changeable topography of the user interface. The surface can include individual nodes that can raise above or lower below the initial surface. Alternatively, the surface can include a shape changeable material that can change the shape of portions thereof into discrete shapes above or below the initial surface. Alternatively, the surface can include a deformable material that can deform portions thereof into discrete forms above or below the initial surface. The changeable topography can define different user interface layouts. The user interface can, for example, be associated with input and/or output devices, such as touch pads, touch screens, and the like.

An improved prepaid telephone card system is provided wherein a system center communicates to a calling party in the language spoken by the calling party. The system includes a system center which comprises an account database of prepaid accounts and a language library containing voice prompts and instructions in various languages. When the system center and the calling party are connected, the system center prompts the calling party in a plurality of languages to enter an account code; receives the account code from the calling party and determines if the account code is valid; accesses a database corresponding to the account code to determine if the calling party has previously set up a preferred language; presents to the calling party a plurality of languages available for selection as the preferred language; inputs from the calling party a selection of the preferred language and records the selection in the database; prompts the calling party, in the preferred language, for a destination telephone number of a desired party; and connects the calling party to the desired party.

An audiovisual system receives audiovisual data and includes a system controller and a storage device to store at least a portion of the audiovisual data for later playback. The audiovisual system further includes a marking module to create metadata in response to a control input for marking the program segments. The metadata includes the information regarding the program segments of the stored portion of the audiovisual data. The audiovisual system further includes a display generator to generate a mosaic representation of the program segments. The audiovisual system further includes a program selector to select a program segment in response to a user input. The selected program segment is selected based on the information of the metadata, whereby the audiovisual system selectively plays back selected program segments of the stored portion of the audiovisual data starting from selected program locations, thereby enabling a user to jump to and play back selected program segments.

The present invention may be regarded as a video recording system and method of enabling the recording of an external video data stream for a video program segment selected using an electronic program guide. The video recording system comprises a user interface that receives user input, a video input interface that receives the external video data stream for the selected video program segment, an isochronous interface connectable to an external rotating storage drive, and a video data management system. The video data management system uses the electronic program guide to select the video program segment in response to the user input. The video data management system recognizes connection of the external rotating storage drive to the video recording system and subsequently identifies the external rotating storage drive as available for video data storage. The video data management system uses the external video data stream for the video program segment to provide streaming video data, and routes at least a portion of the streaming video data to the external rotating storage drive via the isochronous interface in order to record the external video data stream for the video program segment.

A data processing system has at least one integrated circuit containing a central processing unit (CPU) that includes at least first and second processing cores. The integrated circuit also includes input facilities that receive control input specifying which of the processing cores is to be utilized. In addition, the integrated circuit includes configuration logic that decodes the control input and, in response, selectively controls reception of input signals and transmission of output signals of one or more of the processing cores in accordance with the control input. In an illustrative embodiment, the configuration logic is partial-good logic that configures the integrated circuit to utilize the second processing core, in lieu of a defective or inactive first processing core, as a virtual first processing core.

Receiving units with inputs that may be ground-terminated and with inputs that are selectively ground-terminated or non-ground terminated are enabled with signal level shifting and a termination mode selection input. In a first exemplary implementation, a receiving unit is capable of having ground-terminated inputs. However, common mode voltage of the signal that is input to decoding data recovery circuitry is above ground because the input signal may be level shifted in between the ground-terminated inputs and the decoding data recovery circuitry. In a second exemplary implementation, a mode selection is accomplished by switching a voltage divider into operation and bypassing a level shifter for a non-ground terminated mode. For a ground terminated mode, the voltage divider is switched out of operation and the level shifter is switched into operation for its signal output to be decoded. Pre-amplification may also be employed to improve signal strength.

In a multithreaded computing environment, a platform independent method for providing a highly interactive transaction session between a browser residing on a client computer and a data base coupled to a server computer is provided. A web page that includes a plurality of input selection icons and an update icon is requested and displayed by the client computer. A user provides selection data by selecting an input using one of the selection icons which is then sent by the browser to the server computer. The server-side data base is then updated based in part upon the selection data. Once the database has been updated, the update icon only is refreshed indicating that the database has been successfully updated.

A system for confirming a direction of travel of a vehicle includes a location determining system and a control unit. The location determining system is configured to be coupled to a vehicle that travels in a network of plural route segments having fixed positions. The location determining system also is configured to obtain data representative of a measured heading of the vehicle. The measured heading represents a direction of travel of the vehicle. The control unit is configured to receive a designated route segment that is at least one of selected by operator input or provided by a trip plan that designates operational settings of the vehicle for a trip. The control unit is configured to compare the measured heading of the vehicle with one or more designated headings associated with the route segments to verify whether the vehicle is actually traveling on the designated route segment.

A method for providing a service in a user terminal device, in which the user terminal device downloads a service hub program, installs the service hub program, generates an icon container corresponding to the service hub program, displays the icon container, receives an input selecting the icon container, displays an application icon included in the icon container, and deletes a program and data installed in the user terminal device according to a change in status of the user terminal device

A hand-held communication device provides navigation key-based predictive text entry. The hand-held communication device includes a housing generally sized to be held in a human hand having a display disposed for displaying characters selectable for entry in a character position of a text string being entered and a navigation key assembly for scrolling through and selecting from the characters displayed by the display. The characters displayed by the display during text entry are arranged according to the probability of selection of each character for entry in the character position so that the character with the highest probability of selection is selected with a single input from the navigation key assembly.

A Personal Computer (PC) in a second location, provides video signals to a television monitor located in a first location. A stereo amplifies audio from the PC and provides the signal to loudspeakers in the first location. A keyboard, mouse, and controller in the first location, use infrared radiation to transmit commands. An IR receiver, in the first location, detects the commands and provides them to the PC. A communication port is used to receive the initial commands. After the initial remote commands negotiate control the input select switch interchanges the input devices of the second location with input devices of the first location. The interchange gives control of the PC to the first location keyboard, mouse and controller. A video switch/matrix in the second location is also controlled from the first location so that video is provided from the PC to the TV monitor in the first location.

Methods and apparatus for providing uninterruptible power are provided by aspects of the invention. One aspect is more particularly directed to an uninterruptible power supply for providing power to a load. The uninterruptible power supply includes a first input to receive input power from an input power source, an output to provide output power, a bypass input to receive bypass power from a bypass power source, wherein the bypass input is selectively coupled to the output to provide output power from the bypass power source, an input power circuit coupled to the first input and having a DC output that provides DC power having a first DC voltage level, a back-up power source coupled to the input power circuit to provide DC power at the DC output in a back-up mode of operation, and an inverter circuit having an output coupled to the DC output of the input power circuit and having an output coupled to the output of the uninterruptible power supply to provide the output power derived from at least one of the input power source and the back-up power source. The uninterruptible power supply is constructed and arranged in a bypass mode of operation to control the inverter circuit to convert AC power from the bypass power source at the output of the inverter circuit to DC power at the input of the inverter circuit.

Provided is a method of controlling an electronic device by using a remote control device comprising a touch screen, the method including selecting one of a plurality of functions supported by the electronic device via the touch screen, sequentially displaying a plurality of user interfaces, usable for controlling the function selected with an input detected by the touch screen, one-by-one, and controlling the electronic device by using one of the plurality of user interfaces that are sequentially displayed.

A method and apparatus for input data selection for content addressable memory. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes an array of CAM cells, a select circuit adapted to generate a plurality of select signals each indicative of a segment of input data provided to the CAM apparatus, and switch circuitry including a plurality of programmable switch circuits each programmable to output a respective bit of the input data as a comparand bit for the array of CAM cells in response to one of the select signals.

The database system constructs query execution plans that include an input selection operator that verifies the currency of a replica and selects a subplan using the replica for execution only when the replica meets the query's currency constraints. It checks possible query execution plans at construction time against the query's consistency constraints and any plans that may produce a result not meeting the consistency constraints are rejected. A graphical software tool for modeling financial products is provided. The graphical software tool presents a user with a palette of tools for constructing a financial model. Preferably, the financial model is graphically represented as a tree structure, which allows the model to be transformed into an XML format. In general, a tree structure includes a root entity having a set of attributes, along with zero or more child entities. In turn, each of the child entities can have their own attributes and children. In response to an input from a user, objects from the palette are selected and used to construct the financial model. The tool provides a graphical user interface that allows users to construct financial products by combining a series of objects—using GUI techniques such as “drag and drop” to simplify the construction process. Although a number of objects are provided as standard, these may be combined to provide new functionality. A system and method for selecting a voltage output reference required of a DC-DC converter included in a power supply, the voltage output reference corresponding to an operating state of the power supply load. The method stores data for the voltage output reference required for each of a plurality of operating states of the load in a corresponding register. A control input that identifies an operating state of the load is received. An output of the register is selected in response to the control input. The voltage output reference required for the operating state of the load is generated in response to the selected output from the register. An apparatus for selecting a voltage output reference required by a load with a plurality of operating states includes a plurality of registers. Each of the plurality of registers has a register input and a register output, and is configurable to store data corresponding to a voltage required by the load for each of a plurality of operating states. The apparatus also includes a decoder having at least one input and at least one output. The inputs include a plurality of voltage inputs, and a control input. The output includes the voltage output reference. Each of the plurality of voltage inputs are coupled to the respective register output.
