Dynamic User Interface for Configuring and Managing a Process Control System

A process control management method in a computer system for configuring and supervising a process plant includes providing an interactive user interface to manage a plurality of objects in the process plant, where each of the plurality of objects corresponds to a physical or logical entity in the process plant, including generating a navigation pane to display a set of selectable items, each in the set of selectable items corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of objects, and generating a command pane to display a set of selectable controls, each in the set of selectable controls corresponding to a task to be performed on at least one of the plurality of objects in the process plant; receiving a selection of one of an item in the set of selectable items via the navigation panel and a control in the set of selectable controls via the command panel; determining an operational context based on the received selection, wherein the operational context corresponds to one of a range of actions applicable to the selection if the selection is an item selection, or a range of items to which the selection is applicable if the selection is a control selection; and adjusting one of the navigation pane or the command pane according to the operational context, including displaying a subset of selectable items in the navigational pane, wherein each in the subset of selectable items is within the range applicable to the selection, if the selection is a control selection, and displaying a subset of selectable controls in the command pane, wherein each in the subset of selectable controls is within the range applicable to the selection, if the selection is an item selection.

System and method for improved searching on the internet or similar networks and especially improved MetaNews and/or improved automatically generated newspapers

Google has recently made available at http://news.google.com an automated “newspaper”, which searches continuously about 4,500 news sources, and lets users view automatically generated headlines in a few general areas or lets users search for news by keywords. The automatic determination of which news items or news stories are most important is done by 3 main criteria: In how many sources the news item appeared, how important are the news sources in which it appeared, and how close it is to the top in each of these news sources. However, many problems still remain, such as for example: a. The choice of a single main news source and a single image for each item seems arbitrary to the user and limits the user. b. If the user clicks on the “related items” link for that item the user always gets a linear list of typically hundreds or even more than a thousand links to related news items, sorted either by relevance or by time, however, the new list is now without any images and without any clustering, so that many times news stories that are about the same event or even identical, may appear at different positions in the list of related links, and various other news items may appear between them and are typically also dispersed in various places. This makes it vary hard for the user to take advantage efficiently of the list of related items. The present invention solves the above problem by creating recursive clustering, so that preferably at any level in the tree the user can preferably either choose a specific news item from the cluster or from the shown sub-clusters or continue in the tree. Another improvement is that searching the Meta News by keywords can generate an automatic newspaper in a way similar to the original automatically generated newspaper. Many additional improvements to the concept of automated newspapers and/or news MetaSearch are also shown. Other improvements are suggested for improved shareware MetaSearch, improved Web pages search, and other types of searches.

Merchandising amplification via social networking system and method

A system for engaging in online advertising and merchandising of products or brands in or through social networks, examples of which include MySpace.com and Facebook.com. Consumers select products that they are or may be interested in, and post them to a social network for feedback and voting. The items or products selected appear in the consumer's status update, and can be posted for viewing by their network of friends. By clicking on the link, the friends of the consumer can accept and visit the application. The application may then allow the friends to view the product or item selections on which the consumer is seeking feedback. The friends may submit comments or observations about the available selections, and also may be able to vote for the product or products that they prefer, or provide a rating on a particular product or products. All voting and comments may then be posted back to the consumer's social networking homepage, status update, and / or seller's product website along with the original message and link.

Systems and methods of contextualizing and linking media items

Some aspects relate to systems and methods of tagging to enhance contextualization of media items and ease of use. Tag data structures provide an extensible platform to allow description of a concept from multiple points of view and in multiple contexts, such as locations, activities, and people. Individual application instances using these data structures can each maintain a private store of media items, and can be synchronized with a server. Each application owner can select portions of the private store to share. The server also can maintain canonical hierarchies of tags, such as hierarchies of activities and of places. These canonical hierarchies can be provided to application instances, where private modifications / additions can be made. Owners can offer to share private modifications, which can be accepted or rejected. Displays of media item selections and of clouds of related tags can be formed based on the contextual and relational information contained in the tags and in the canonical hierarchies.

Item selection method for touch screen devices

A user device may display content items in a content area on a touch screen display of the user device. The user device detects a touching of the touch screen display and determines a location of the touching. The user device divides the content area into a first content sub-area and a second content sub-area at a location proximate to the location of the touching, wherein a portion of the content corresponding to the touching is included in the first content sub-area. The user device shifts the first content sub-area away from the location of the touching to create a blank space between the first content sub-area and the second content sub-area.
