4597 results about "Electrolytic capacitor" patented technology

An electrolytic capacitor (occasionally abbreviated e-cap) is a polarized capacitor whose anode or positive plate is made of a metal that forms an insulating oxide layer through anodization. This oxide layer acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. A solid, liquid, or gel electrolyte covers the surface of this oxide layer, serving as the cathode or negative plate of the capacitor. Due to their very thin dielectric oxide layer and enlarged anode surface, electrolytic capacitors have a much higher capacitance-voltage (CV) product per unit volume than ceramic capacitors or film capacitors, and so can have large capacitance values. There are three families of electrolytic capacitor: aluminum electrolytic capacitors, tantalum electrolytic capacitors, and niobium electrolytic capacitors.

Solid electrolytic capacitor containing a conductive polymer

A method for forming an electrolytic capacitor is disclosed. The method includes forming a conductive polymer coating by polymerizing a monomer in the presence of less than a stoichiometric amount of an oxidative polymerization catalyst. The present inventor has found that the use of less than the stoichiometric amount of the oxidative polymerization catalyst per mole of monomer can slow the polymerization of the monomer, creating oligomers that are shorter in length than if fully polymerized into a polymer. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that these shorter oligomers provide better penetration into the porous anode. Thus, the resulting conductive polymer layer can be more intimately positioned with respect to the anode. As a result, the formed capacitor can exhibit better performance.

A construction arrangement for a small set-top box to protect cryptographic capabilities and prevent a digital program in clear from being able to be tapped as required by Digital Rights Management protocols. A first layer of sheet metal capable of blocking X-rays, is formed as a shallow pan to hold a set of printed circuit boards. A second layer has a thin epoxy based printed circuit material. A third layer has a printed circuit board with integrated components placed on top of the second layer. A fourth layer has a three layer thin printed circuit board with a first and second metallic layer and holes for large components, such as electrolytic capacitors. A black liquid thermosetting epoxy fills the interstices between the sheet metal layer and the second layer, and between the second layer and the third layer, and between the third layer and the fourth layer, thereby preventing access to exposed circuit trace carrying digital signals in the clear. A connection from the first metallic layer of the fourth printed circuit material layer to a sending circuit and a connection from the second metallic layer so that a short between these two layers sets off an indicator circuit that an attempt is made to enter the protected area.

Reduced capacitance AC/DC/AC power converter

An AC / DC / AC power converter is constructed without using any electrolytic capacitor, such that it is more compact, durable and reliable. This converter only required a small capacitance for its DC link and this capacitor can be easily obtainable with other types of capacitors such as film or ceramic type. The system further includes means to disconnect both input and output to this DC bus capacitor. A controller capable of fast monitoring the DC bus voltage is also able of quickly disconnecting the capacitor out of either input or output energy path to prevent the capacitor from being charged to over-voltage. The controller also possesses capability of re-connecting the disrupted energy path once the DC bus voltage returns to normal.

Apparatus and methods of operation of passive LED lighting equipment

This invention is concerned with the control and design of a LED lighting system that does not need electrolytic capacitors in the entire system and can generate light output with reduced luminous flux fluctuation. The proposal is particularly suitable, but not restricted to, off-line applications in which the lighting system is powered by the ac mains. By eliminating electrolytic capacitors which have a limited lifetime of typically 15000 hours, the proposed system can be developed with passive and robust electrical components such as inductor and diode circuits, and it features long lifetime, low maintenance cost, robustness against extreme temperature variations and good power factor. No extra electronic control board is needed for the proposed passive circuits, which can become dimmable systems if the ac input voltage can be adjusted by external means.

Hermetically Sealed Capacitor Assembly

A capacitor assembly that includes a conductive polymer electrolytic capacitor that is enclosed and hermetically sealed within a ceramic housing in the presence of an inert gas is provided. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the ceramic housing is capable of limiting the amount of oxygen and moisture supplied to the conductive polymer of the capacitor. In this manner, the conductive polymer is less likely to oxidize in high temperature environments, thus increasing the thermal stability of the capacitor assembly.

Electrolytic capacitor

An electrolytic capacitor with a further lowered impedance is provided. In the electrolytic capacitor in accordance with the present invention, respective currents directed opposite from each other flow through anode and cathode vias extending along the thickness of a substrate. The anode vias are lopsidedly located in a marginal area of an anode electrode pattern, and thus are disposed significantly close to the cathode vias formed in a cathode electrode pattern disposed close to the anode electrode pattern. The cathode vias are lopsidedly located in a marginal area of the cathode electrode pattern, and thus are disposed significantly close to the anode vias. Since the anode and cathode vias are formed close to each other as such, this electrolytic capacitor achieves a lower ESL, thereby attaining an impedance lower than that of a conventional electrolytic capacitor.

Insulation type ac-DC converter and LED DC power supply device using the same

In an insulation type AC-dc converter in which input current from a commercial power supply is converted to obtain insulated direct current, the overall efficiency is raised and the structure is simplified. A multi-resonance type half-bridge DC-DC converter having an insulation transformer T is used as a first converter, and a boosting chopper circuit for power factor improvement is used as a second converter. Hence through multi-resonance operation, increases in losses can be suppressed even when the switching frequency is raised, and because a half-bridge circuit is used, switching elements and similar with lower voltage ratings can be employed, whereby overall efficiency can be increased. Moreover, a voltage substantially similar to the full-wave rectified waveform of the power supply voltage is obtained from the output capacitor at the boosting chopper circuit input, whereby there is no need for a feed-forward circuit across the insulation transformer, and moreover the electrolytic capacitor which had to be provided on the converter input side is unnecessary. This is advantageous for achieving miniaturization and a thin design.

Protective coating for electrolytic capacitors

A solid electrolytic capacitor that comprises an anode that contains a valve-action metal (e.g., tantalum, niobium, and the like) and a dielectric film overlying the anode is provided. The capacitor also comprises a protective coating overlying the dielectric film, wherein the protective coating contains a relatively insulative, resinous material. For example, in one embodiment, the resinous material can be a drying oil, such as olive oil, linseed oil, tung oil, castor oil, soybean oil, shellac, and derivatives thereof. The capacitor also comprises a conductive polymer coating overlying the protective coating. As a result of the present invention, it has been discovered that a capacitor can be formed that can have a relatively low leakage current, dissipation factor, and equivalents series resistance.

Hermetically Sealed Capacitor Assembly

A capacitor assembly that includes an electrolytic capacitor that contains an anode body, dielectric overlying the anode, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric is provided. An anode lead is also electrically connected to the anode body and extends in a longitudinal direction therefrom. The anode lead is connected to an “upstanding” portion of a leadframe. Among other things, this helps to limit substantial horizontal movement of the lead and thereby improve the mechanical robustness of the part. The capacitor and leadframe are enclosed and hermetically sealed within a ceramic housing in the presence of an inert gas. It is believed that the ceramic housing is capable of limiting the amount of oxygen and moisture supplied to the conductive polymer of the capacitor. In this manner, the solid electrolyte (e.g., conductive polymer) is less likely to undergo a reaction in high temperature environments, thus increasing the thermal stability of the capacitor assembly.
