A dielectric resonator is a piece of dielectric (nonconductive) material, usually ceramic, that is designed to function as a resonator for radio waves, generally in the microwave and millimeter wave bands. The microwaves are confined inside the resonator material by the abrupt change in permittivity at the surface, and bounce back and forth between the sides. At certain frequencies, the resonant frequencies, the microwaves form standing waves in the resonator, oscillating with large amplitudes. Dielectric resonators generally consist of a "puck" of ceramic that has a large dielectric constant and a low dissipation factor. The resonant frequency is determined by the overall physical dimensions of the resonator and the dielectric constant of the material.

Adjusted directivity dielectric resonator antenna

A dielectric resonator antenna having a resonator formed from a dielectric material mounted on a ground plane with a conductive skirt. The ground plane is formed from a conductive material. First and second probes are electrically coupled to the resonator for providing first and second signals, respectively, to or receiving from the resonator. The first and second probes are spaced apart from each other. The first and second probes are formed of conductive strips that are electrically connected to the perimeter of the resonator and are substantially orthogonal with respect to the ground plane. A dual band antenna can be constructed by positioning and connecting two dielectric resonator antennas together. Each resonator in the dual band configuration resonates at a particular frequency, thereby providing dual band operation. The resonators can be positioned either side by side or vertically. Further advantage is obtained by mounting the dual antenna stack within a radome.

A multi-mode cavity filter, comprising: a dielectric resonator body incorporating a piece of dielectric material, the piece of dielectric material having a shape such that it can support at least a first resonant mode and a second substantially degenerate resonant mode; a conductive layer substantially covering the dielectric resonator body but having one or more apertures therein allowing access to the dielectric resonator body; and a coupling structure arranged in an aperture of the one or more apertures, comprising at least one coupling path for at least one of coupling an input signal to the first and second resonant modes and coupling an output signal from the first and second resonant modes, the coupling path having an open-circuit end located adjacent to an edge of the aperture for controlling a strength of electric field generated by the coupling structure.
