System and method for deciding when to correct image-specific defects based on camera, scene, display and demographic data

A captured image is processed with one or more correction processes selected from a plurality of such processes, each associated with correction of a specific type of image defect, in order to improve the appearance of a viewed image generated from the captured image. Preliminary to the image processing, meta data related to image capture is obtained that is unique to each captured image, where the meta data is capable of indicating whether the specific types of image defects are likely to be present in the viewed image generated from the captured image. The processing then involves predicting the presence of the image defects based at least in part on the meta data, thereby generating process application criteria which indicate a level of image defect that if left untreated would reduce the perceived quality of the viewed image; selecting one or more correction processes to employ on the captured image based on the process application criteria; and applying the one or more selected correction processes to the captured image to generate the viewed image.

Quantization loop with heuristic approach

A quantizer finds a quantization threshold using a quantization loop with a heuristic approach. Following the heuristic approach reduces the number of iterations in the quantization loop required to find an acceptable quantization threshold, which instantly improves the performance of an encoder system by eliminating costly compression operations. A heuristic model relates actual bit-rate of output following compression to quantization threshold for a block of a particular type of data. The quantizer determines an initial approximation for the quantization threshold based upon the heuristic model. The quantizer evaluates actual bit-rate following compression of output quantized by the initial approximation. If the actual bit-rate satisfies a criterion such as proximity to a target bit-rate, the quantizer sets accepts the initial approximation as the quantization threshold. Otherwise, the quantizer adjusts the heuristic model and repeats the process with a new approximation of the quantization threshold. In an illustrative example, a quantizer finds a uniform, scalar quantization threshold using a quantization loop with a heuristic model adapted to spectral audio data. During decoding, a dequantizer applies the quantization threshold to decompressed output in an inverse quantization operation.

Method for assisting video compression in a computer system

One embodiment of the present invention provides a method that facilitates compression of video data in a computer system by performing the time-consuming task of computing the difference between successive frames of video data independently from the central processing unit. This frees the often-overburdened central processing unit from performing this time-consuming compression operation and can thereby improve the handling of video data. Thus, one embodiment of the present invention can be characterized as a method for compressing video data in a computer system. This method includes receiving a stream of data from a current video frame in the computer system. It also includes computing a difference frame from the current video frame and a previous video frame “on-the-fly” as the current video frame streams into the computer system. The method additionally includes storing the difference frame in a memory in the computer system.
