Method and apparatus for breathing during anesthesia

A method and apparatus are provided for ventilation of patients during general anesthesia. Breathing gas is supplied to the patient during anesthesia at a controlled volume above the functional residual capacity of the patient's lungs. The patient is allowed to spontaneously respire when the volume of breathing gas is above the functional residual capacity. The pressure of the breathing gas is periodically reduced to facilitate expulsion of carbon dioxide-containing gas from the patient. The system promotes alveolar ventilation, carbon dioxide excretion, oxygenation and respiratory monitoring in patients who receive general anesthesia.

Cartridge with Rapidly Increasing Sequential Ignitions for Guns and Ordnances

A cartridge may be loaded with a powder column containing stratified, stacked layers of propellant, each powder layer over-compressed to a specified degree, with the burn rate controlled by the specified degree of over-compression applied to each respective powder layer. The application of a highly compressed powder column reduces the burn rate, and may force one or more of the powder layers to launch with the projectile down the barrel. Accordingly, the powder column is forced to burn in a manner similar to fuel burning in a solid fuel rocket engine. This greatly reduces the pressure(s) developed in the chamber, and permits the force of the burning powder to be efficiently focused on forward propulsion. The rapidly increasing set of sequential ignitions provides higher and higher energy densities with each subsequent ignition, and creates a more uniform linear acceleration of the projectile for the full length of the target barrel.

Method for driving fuel injection pump

The present invention achieves an increase in the amount of vapor that is expelled, stabilized fuel injection and improved starting characteristics in a fuel injection pump. In an electromagnetically driven fuel injection pump 20 which allows fuel to escape into the return passage 5 in the initial region of the pressure-feeding stroke of the plunger 21, and which pressure-feeds fuel into the injection port 33 in the later region of the pressure-feeding stroke, pulse powering of the coil 23 that does not lead to the injection of fuel, i.e., pulse powering which is such that the plunger 21 performs a reciprocating motion through the initial region, is performed when the engine 2 is in an idle operating state, or in a state in which the engine 2 is re-started after being stopped immediately following high-load operation. As a result, vapor can be expelled with good efficiency, and the flow rate of the circulated fuel is increased so that the cooling effect is also increased, thus causing the generation of vapor to be suppressed as well, so that the starting characteristics or re-starting characteristics are improved.

An elongate hollow structure and method of constructing the hollow structure is described, the hollow structure including a radially inner portion and a radially outer portion merging together to form a tubular wall structure. The method includes providing the radially inner portion, assembling the radially outer portion about the radially inner portion, and radially expanding the inner portion. The outer portion comprises an outer layer of fibre reinforced composite construction surrounded by a flexible outer casing. A space is provided between the radially inner portion and flexible outer casing. The outer layer includes reinforcement and a binder. The flexible outer casing resists radial expansion of the reinforcement, subjecting it to radial compression. The radially expanding inner portion cooperates with the flexible outer casing to cause the volume of the space to progressively decrease, causing the binder to spread through the space between the radially inner portion and flexible outer casing.

End closure for an edible collagen casing and a method for obtaining thereof

The invention relates to an edible tubular collagen film which has a closure at either of their ends. The closure is formed by an edible solid ring-like element which tightens the end portion of casing and seals the outlet of the same, in order to stop the filling mass upon beginning of a sausage stuffing process, whereby in such a process one can rescue the initial filled sausage for its further processing, whereafter the ring disappears. This edible closing element is characterized by being of an edible, and thermoplastic composition, which is preferably based on collagen or gelatine. The solid composition has a low melting temperature and becomes adhesive at fluid state onto the surface of a collagen film which contains a certain level of moisture. The strong cohesiveness of the material of said composition in the fluid state as well as the so narrow difference between its melting temperature and the temperature of solidification, makes that a welding of said material to be set very quickly. The closure can be made before or after the shirring of the collagen casing and the present invention provides also a process to perform such a closure by heat welding the closing element on the casing material.

Barrier catheter apparatus and method

A catheter for use in delivery or withdrawal of a formulation, wherein the catheter has an outer layer comprising a bio-compatible material and a barrier layer comprising a material that provides a more effective barrier than the outer layer against inward and outward diffusion of substances that may cause destabilization of the formulation. The outer surface of the barrier layer contacts at least a portion of the inner surface of the outer layer. The catheter may include a flared distal end tip to aid in the release, during a bolus delivery or catheter flush, of any obstruction situated at the distal end tip of the catheter. The larger cross-sectional area at the flared distal end tip minimizes the chances that any obstruction that develops at the distal end tip will be sufficient to hinder the flow of the formulation within the lumen of the catheter. The catheter may also include a slit valve at the distal end tip which has one or more and, preferably a plurality of slits that may be elastically extended to an open position by the expulsion of the formulation during an IIP pump stroke. During the interval between IIP pump strokes, the slits return to a closed position and hinder the inflow of body fluid into the distal end tip.
