A system for electronically distilling information from a business document uses a network scanner to electronically scan a platen area, having a business document thereon, to create a bitmap. A method and system for facilitating error free scan is disclosed herein. The system for preventing wrong scan administration to a patient comprises: an identifier associated with a patient for identifying at least one patient parameter. The patient parameter may be configured to indicate patient information such as pregnancy or the presence of metallic implants. An interrogator is provided for automatically interrogating the identifier to obtain the at least one patient parameter during one or more predefined stages when the patient is in proximity of a scanner. Programmable ideality factor compensation in temperature sensors

A temperature sensor circuit and system providing accurate readings using a temperature diode whose ideality factor may fall within a determined range. In one set of embodiments a change in diode junction voltage (ΔVBE) proportional to the temperature of the diode is captured and provided to an ADC, which may perform required signal conditioning functions on ΔVBE, and provide a numeric value output corresponding to the temperature of the diode. Errors in the measured temperature that might result from using diodes with ideality factors that differ from an expected ideality factor may be eliminated by programming the system to account for differing ideality factors. The gain of the temperature sensor may be matched to the ideality factor of the temperature diode by using an accurate, highly temperature stable reference voltage of the ADC to set the gain of the temperature measurement system. The reference voltage may have a trim capability to change the gain setting voltage by a digital address comprising a determined number of bits, with the programmable range for the reference voltage corresponding to a determined range of ideality factors.

An improved fire alarm system capable of reliably detecting the presence of fire caused by different sources. The fire alarm system detects a smoke density (S) as well as a temperature difference (DELTAT) within a predetermined time interval, and has primary criteria of (i) whether the smoke density (S) exceeds a smoke threshold [e.g., S>5% / m]; (ii) whether the temperature difference (DELTAT) exceeds a temperature difference threshold [e.g., DELTAT>=18 C]; and (iii) whether a combination of S and DELTAT satisfies an inequality [e.g. 2S+DELTAT >=12] which is based upon a decreasing function of DELTAT with an increase of S. The detected smoke density and the temperature difference are examined with reference to the primary criteria so as to provide a fire warning signal indicating a possible fire presence when anyone of the above primary criteria is satisfied.

The invention relates to a method and several arrangements for determining signal degradations of an optical signal transmitted in a transmission signal in the presence of signal distortions, wherein at least one part of the optical signal is fed to an adaptive optimal or electric filter at a place of measurement in the transmission system and is subsequently measured according to one or several quality parameters. A first measurement of the quality parameter is carried out by transparent adjustment of the adaptive filter and other measurements of the quality parameters are carried out with redefined transparency properties of the adaptive optical filter which respectively have an influence upon signal distortions. As a result it is possible to analyze or to separate signal-influencing effects or groups of effects. In another embodiment of the invention, the filter parameters of an optical / electric equalizer or filter structure, which are adjusted by said analysis, are described according to optimization of the signal quality.

Method and apparatus for self-calibration of a tunable-source phase shifting interferometer

A conventional phase shifting interferometer that is used for measuring distances (e.g., in the micron range) typically provides two orthogonal, or quadrature, signals. The output signals typically include an offset that introduces a related measurement error unless it is compensated or eliminated. A standard way for eliminating offsets is to generate and / or process additional signals that are phase shifted by 180 degrees, or other known amounts. In contrast, the present invention provides a signal indicative of the offset contribution to a detector signal in an interferometer by varying the wavelength of radiation from the illumination source of the interferometer during the time that the offset determining signal is acquired or integrated by that detector. The method can be conveniently implemented with each signal detection channel of an interferometer, for a variety of interferometer designs. The method determines the offset error within a very short time period and without the need to provide additional or adjusted optical paths, or controlled phase shifts.

In a test phase an excitation force is applied to the test specimen, while at least one decision parameter is determined. The decision parameter is indicative of a degree of slack in the coupling of the test specimen. Method for evaluating the signals of an electronic image sensor during pattern recognition of image contents in a test piece

Signals generated by an electronic image sensor, during pattern recognition of image contents in a test piece, are evaluated. The image sensor receives an input light signal and emits an electrical output signal that correlates with the input light signal. The image content of a window, having a size of n×n pixels, is analyzed. The output signals that are either directly or indirectly emitted by the image sensor are transformed into at least one translationally invariant characteristic value by the use of at least one calculation specification. This characteristic value is weighted by at least one fuzzy matching function which correlates with the value range of the characteristic value. A higher-order fuzzy matching function is generated by linking all of the matching functions by use of a calculation specification including at least one rule. A sympathy value is determined from the higher-order fuzzy matching function. That sympathy value is compared with a threshold value. A decision is then made from this comparison regarding association with a class.
