A lens injector includes a thin sheet-like lens glide member, mounted upon a tapered knife, that maintains a wedge-shaped opening in the cornea upon withdrawal of the knife. The addition of the adjustable protective guard and the retractable protective guard on the blade guard sheath of the mechanical tissue morcellator act to control and direct positioning of the tissue morcellator within the body cavity of the patient.

A spring-driven safety feature prevents unintentional movement of the first and second jaw members into the cutting configuration. The actuation mechanism has cooperating locking elements of which a first element is connected to a first abutment point and a second element is connected to a second abutment point. The locking elements can move relative to one another such that, in an inactive operating state, the one locking element meshes with a friction fit into the cooperating other locking element and releases it in an active operating state.
