A disk drive is disclosed having a disk, and a head actuated over the disk, the head comprising a magnetoresistive (MR) element. Control circuitry within the disk drive sets an operating bias current for the MR element by computing a target voltage for the MR element, applying a bias current to the MR element, measuring a voltage across the MR element corresponding to the bias current, and adjusting the bias current applied to the MR element until the measured voltage substantially equals the target voltage.

A method is disclosed for setting an operating bias current for a magnetoresistive (MR) element. A bias current is applied to the MR element, and a voltage across the MR element is measured corresponding to the bias current. The bias current is then adjusted in response to the bias current multiplied by a ratio of a target voltage and the measured voltage. The adjusted bias current is then applied to the MR element. In one embodiment, the bias current is adjusted until the measured voltage substantially equals the target voltage.

In one aspect, the present invention provides a wireless power supply having a plunger for mechanically interconnecting a remote device with the power supply. The plunger may be extendable / retractable to interfit with the remote device. In a second aspect, the present invention provides a wireless power supply with a movable primary that allows for close alignment between the primary and the secondary when the remote device is disposed within a range of different positions with respect to the charging surface. A method for protecting a magnetic head according to one embodiment includes reducing a relative humidity in a vicinity of a magnetic head by passing an elevated bias current through a sensor of the head during at least some time periods when the sensor is not in use for reading data, the elevated bias current being chosen to be sufficient to heat the sensor to a level which will reduce the local relative humidity to below a threshold level for reducing or eliminating corrosion of the sensor. Additional methods are also presented.

A magnetic sensor includes a magnetoresistance element having a peak of a thermal fluctuation strength of magnetization under a magnetic field having a certain frequency, a frequency filter connected to the magnetoresistance element and having its transmittance decreased or increased in substantially the frequency of the magnetic field to output a signal corresponding substantially to the peak of the thermal fluctuation strength of magnetization, and a detector connected to the frequency filter to detect the magnetic field based on the signal of the frequency filter.

A servo writer according to the present invention is a servo writer which writes a servo signal on a servo band of a magnetic tape. An adaptive equalizer comprising a variable filter which equalizes a digital input signal which is input in a time sequential order, an adaptive controller unit which updates a filter coefficient of the variable filter based on an output signal of the variable filter and the input signal and according to an equalization algorithm, and a coefficient resetting unit which resets a filter coefficient of the variable filter at a predetermined timing.

Disclosed herein are methods and systems for sensing and controlling the temperature of a resistive element configured for use in a read / write head of a magnetic data storage device. In one embodiment, a method includes detecting a voltage across the resistive element, where the voltage varies as a function of a temperature of the resistive element. The method also includes comparing the voltage to a predetermined value to determine a variation of the voltage from the predetermined value, and then altering a power applied to the resistive element based on the variation. In this exemplary embodiment, the temperature of the resistive element is then controlled as a function of the altered applied power.

An electrical potential difference between a slider body and a hard disk of a hard disk drive is eliminated based on the flying-height spacing of the slider body between the slider body and the hard disk. A predetermined bias voltage is applied between the slider body and the hard disk that includes a DC component and an AC component and that is based on the detected flying-height spacing of the slider body. The flying-height spacing can be detected based a minimum slider-to-disk clearance change from a design flying height of the slider at a frequency of the AC component as the DC component of the predetermined bias voltage is varied. Alternatively, the flying-height spacing can be detected based on a minimum electrodynamic response of the slider to a first harmonic of the AC frequency of the AC component as the DC component is varied.

A shingled magnetic recording (SMR) hard disk drive (HDD) essentially eliminates the effect of far track erasure (FTE) in the boundary regions of annular data bands caused by writing in the boundary regions of adjacent annular data bands. The extent of the FTE effect is determined for each track within a range of tracks of the track being written. Based on the relative FTE effect for all the tracks in the range, a count increment (CI) table or a cumulative count increment (CCI) table is maintained for all the tracks in the range. For every writing to a track in a boundary region, a count for each track in an adjacent boundary region, or a cumulative count for the adjacent boundary region, is increased. When the count reaches a predetermined threshold the data is read from that band and rewritten to the same band.

The validation circuit is operable to: receive the write data, augment the write data with a first noise sequence to yield a first augmented data series; and augment a derivative of the first augmented data series with a second noise sequence to yield the read data.
