Network-linked interactive three-dimensional composition and display of saleable objects in situ in viewer-selected scenes for purposes of object promotion and procurement, and generation of object advertisements

A design professional such as an interior designer, furniture sales associate or advertising designer running a browser program at a client computer (i) uses the world wide web to connect to a graphics server computer, and (ii) interactively selects or specifies furnishings or other objects from this server computer and previews the scene and communicates with the server, so as to (iii) receive and display to his or her client a high-fidelity high-quality virtual-reality perspective-view photorealistic image of furnishings or other objects displayed in, most commonly, a virtual representation of an actual room of a client's home or an advertisement scene. The photorealistic images, optionally provided to bona fide design professionals and their clients for free, but typically paid for by the product's manufacturer, promote the sale to the client of goods which are normally obtained through the graphics service provider's customer's distributor, profiting both the service provider and the design professional. Models, textures and maps of existing objects are built as necessary from object views or actual objects. Full custom objects, including furniture and other products not yet built, are readily presented in realistic virtual image. Also, a method of interactive advertising permits a prospective customer of a product, such as furniture, to view a virtual but photorealistic, image of a selected product located within a customer-selected scene, such as the prospective customer's own home, to allow in-context visualization.

System and method for delivering high-performance online multimedia services

Disclosed is a scalable, hierarchical, distributed network architecture and processes for the delivery of high-performance, end-to-end online multimedia services, including Internet services such as World Wide Web access. The network architecture connects a high-speed private backbone to multiple network access points of the Internet, to a network operation center, to a back office system, and to multiple regional servers in regional data centers. Each of the regional servers connects to several caching servers in modified head-ends, which in turn connect via fiber optics to many neighborhood nodes. Finally, each node connects via coaxial cable to multiple end-user systems. The processes include those for replicating and caching frequently-accessed content, and multicasting content customized per region or locality.

Cost-benefit approach to automatically composing answers to questions by extracting information from large unstructured corpora

The present invention relates to a system and methodology to facilitate extraction of information from a large unstructured corpora such as from the World Wide Web and / or other unstructured sources. Information in the form of answers to questions can be automatically composed from such sources via probabilistic models and cost-benefit analyses to guide resource-intensive information-extraction procedures employed by a knowledge-based question answering system. The analyses can leverage predictions of the ultimate quality of answers generated by the system provided by Bayesian or other statistical models. Such predictions, when coupled with a utility model can provide the system with the ability to make decisions about the number of queries issued to a search engine (or engines), given the cost of queries and the expected value of query results in refining an ultimate answer. Given a preference model, information extraction actions can be taken with the highest expected utility. In this manner, the accuracy of answers to questions can be balanced with the cost of information extraction and analysis to compose the answers.

System and method for enhancing recorded radio or television programs with information on the world wide web

The present invention is directed to a system, method and computer program for enabling a user (100) (an auditor or a viewer) to access complementary information related to one or a plurality of sequences or topics of interest (102) in a recorded program (103) previously broadcast on the radio or television and played back on a device, such as an audio or video tape or disk recorder / player (104). The preferred embodiment of the invention relates to a system and method for enabling a person (100) listening to or watching a recorded program (103), to select one or a plurality of topics (101) (102) drawing his or her attention and for immediately receiving further information related to these topics from the World Wide Web. The system is based on the synchronization of local times (204) (205) of transmitters (201) and recorders (203). The flow of information transmitted, received and recorded is always synchronized, independently of the relative positions of recorders and transmitters. The synchronization is done referring to an absolute or universal time such as the Global Positioning System Time (GPS-time), the Global Orbiting Navigational Satellite System (GLONASS) time or another suitable universal time based on a satellite system. The GPS or GLONASS receivers are integrated or connected to the broadcasting stations. At the receiver side, GPS or GLONASS receivers may be integrated or connected to the audio or video recorders. The system is also based on a plurality of hyperlinks defined during the production and recording of the broadcast program, for given sequences corresponding to particular intervals of time synchronized with the universal (absolute) time. The hyperlinks are associated wit the information that is broadcast in the program. They can be selected by users during the playback of the recorded program during predefined intervals of time and activated to access additional information and services.

System and method for enhancing live speech with information accessed from the world wide web

The present invention is directed to a system, method and computer program for enabling an auditor of a live speech to access immediately after or at a later time, complementary information related with terms pronounced during this speech. The system associates hyperlinks (i.e., URLs) with selected terms or words likely to be pronounced by the speaker in the course of the speech. A speech recognition system operating on a speaker device (i.e., a computing system a with a microphone connected to it) recognizes during the speech (i.e., word spotting) the pronunciation by the speaker of anyone of said hyperlinked terms, and records the time at which each recognized hyperlinked term has been pronounced. The system is also based on the synchronization of the speaker device with several auditors devices (e.g., workstations, portable computers, personal digital assistants —PDAs, smart phones, or any other type of handheld computing devices) according to a same universal time, so that the flow of information transmitted by the speaker and received by the auditors is always synchronized, independently of the relative positions of the speaker and auditors. Each time the auditor perceives an interesting topic during the speech, he immediately selects the topic simply by pressing a reserved key on the auditor's device. Universal times at which topics are selected by the auditor are stored in the auditor device.
