Bandwidth is the amount of information that can be transmitted along a certain signal or wire during a given time. Wireless bandwidth is affected greatly by the signal strength of the wireless router to you computer.

Time-slot-based system and method of inter-vehicle communication

Device, system and method, in a vehicle communication system, to transmit wirelessly a message comprising the position, heading and speed of a vehicle or other moving object, wherein the transmission is repeated at regular intervals in a temporarily fixed time slot within a predetermined basic time interval. In a key embodiment the message duration is equal to or less than a predetermined time slot duration. Embodiments use generally the same time slot in a contiguous sequence of basic time intervals. Algorithms are described to resolve wireless interference within a time slot. Embodiments divide the basic time interval in multiple durations, “class regions,” for different message classes. Embodiments use different wireless bandwidth allocation algorithms for the class regions.

System and method for coordinating bandwidth usage of a communication channel by wireless network nodes

A system and method is provided for coordinating wireless bandwidth usage of a common frequency band by wireless nodes in two disjoint networks, such as an infrastructure (“IS”) network and an ad hoc (“AH”) network. When AH nodes move into the transmission range of an access point of the IS network, they register with the access point and listen to the access point to tell them when they are allowed to transmit data over a given transmission channel. The access point coordinates the bandwidth usage by broadcasting ad hoc mode poll signals to indicate that the ad hoc nodes may transmit over the channel, and sending infrastructure mode poll signals to indicate that a wireless node in the IS network can transmit over the given channel. The access point makes a fraction of the bandwidth available for communications by the wireless AH nodes in its transmission range, while guaranteeing the rest of the bandwidth for wireless nodes in the IS network.

Traffic management in distributed wireless networks

Wireless networks and devices are ubiquitous today. For service providers to offer customers QoS and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) means in part providing resilient connectivity of wireless devices with good signal strength, good Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SNIR), and adequate useable bandwidth. Doing so requires that devices transmitting and receiving packets use over-the-air bandwidth efficiently and manage over-the-air congestion. According to embodiments of the invention QoS measurements and controls are incorporated only in the network (i.e. APs or controllers) and therefore QoS and SLAs can be achieved with all deployed client stations versus standards based approaches that require additional capabilities in network nodes, client stations and in most cases modifications to the applications. SLAs can be provided exploiting embodiments of the invention for traffic prioritization, capacity improvements through load distribution, and adjacent channel interference mitigation discretely or in combination with standards based mechanisms.

Quality of service over paths having a wireless-link

The invention provides Quality of Service assurances in a manner expected in other media to communications over paths that include one or more wireless links. The invention combines a subnet bandwidth manager (“SBM”) at an access point (“AP”) to track allocations of wireless bandwidth. The invention further incorporates multiple priority levels for packet transmission in a two-prong stochastic scheme. The first prong reserves bandwidth at each of the intermediate nodes in a transmission path subject to a veto by any intermediate node. The second prong modulates the transmission probability of a packet based on the previous failed attempts at transmission and the priority level of the packet. The overall result of this hybrid scheme is to not shut out users with the lowest priority, e.g., “best effort” priority, while assuring adequate bandwidth to higher priority applications.

Wireless docking station

With the rapid innovation in wireless technology, greater bandwidth is now available. This invention proposes to use the much greater wireless bandwidth available with ultrawideband (UWB) technology, to replace the current expensive solution for laptop port replication using hardwired connections. First, a wireless interface between the laptop and the port replicator will no longer require the expensive, high-pincount docking station connector currently in use in today's products. This will increase reliability of the docking system, and decrease cost of the solution. Second, a wireless dock will allow the laptop user to more quickly associate their computer with the docking station and connected peripherals merely by placing the laptop in proximity with the dock. Third, the bandwidth of the UWB wireless connection can be superior to that of a USB solution, with data rates exceeding 1 Gbps. When these advantages are combined, the UWB-powered docking station will offer a significant alternative to the current approach for laptop docking while protecting the customer investment in peripherals.

Centrally controlled time division multiplexing wireless communication micro base station network

The invention discloses a centrally controlled time division multiplexing wireless communication micro base station network. The conventional wireless technology can only provide a narrow-band service because of the limitation of bandwidth and quality.
