Method and apparatus for improved determination of range and angle of arrival utilizing a two tone CW radar

An improved system is provided for aiming a shotgun-based or other countermeasure system so as to be able to countermeasure incoming rockets or projectiles. In one embodiment a shotgun aimed and controlled by the subject system projects a pattern of pellets to intercept a rocket-propelled grenade or incoming projectile. The fire control system uses a CW two-tone monopulse radar to derive range and angle of arrival within 150 milliseconds, with range and angle of arrival measurements having approximately twice the accuracy of prior CW two-tone monopulse radars. The improvement derives from using all of the information in the returned radar beams and is the result of the recognition that one can use the Sum and Difference signals to assemble a two-by-two Rank One matrix that permits using singular value decomposition techniques to generate range and angle of arrival matrices in which all available information is used and in which noise is eliminated.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for substituting a different stock, and a forend assembly, in a long gun (e.g., a shotgun) without the use of tools by a user in the field. Applicants' preferred apparatus for substituting a stock comprises: a long gun (e.g., an illustrated shotgun) having a stock and a receiver assembly; and an adaptor which removably interconnects the stock to the receiver assembly, wherein the adaptor includes: an adaptor base bolted to the receiver assembly; and a tool-less stock release means slidably attached to the base, whereby the stock release can be lifted up by a user to release the stock from the adaptor. Upon a new stock being placed in the adaptor, the stock release means can be pushed down, back into the adaptor base, to lock the adaptor, whereupon the adaptor interconnects the substitute stock with the receiver assembly. Applicants' preferred forend assembly comprises: a modified forend carrier that is affixed to the long gun (e.g., the illustrated shotgun); and a forend which removably mounts onto the fixed carrier by a tool-less forend release means attached to the forend and carrier, wherein the tool-less forend release means comprises a tongue-and-groove arrangement and a releasable lock. This permits the forend to be swapped out.

An insulator bushing wildlife guard having features for easier alignment and installation of the guard on the bushing. The guard has two hinged body sections of insulating material. An outer edge of each body section is provided with a plurality of flexible fingers that allow conductors to pass through from the interior to the exterior of the enclosure when the two portions of the guard are engaged. In one embodiment, the guard is spring biased toward a closed position. A handle on the back has inner grooves to make it easier to grasp and manipulate the guard using a shotgun stick. On a lower front side of each portion of the guard, spaced-apart, curved, horizontal upper and lower flanges help align the guard with the topmost skirt of a bushing. Medial walls having a curved, sloped, concave or otherwise inwardly-directed configuration between the two flanges facilitate forcing the guard open by pushing it against the bushing. An external tab limiter, disposed above the upper flange, makes it difficult to install the guard over any part of the bushing other than the topmost skirt of the bushing. An alternative version of the guard has a releasable trigger, which is used to hold the two portions in an open position until the bushing or power line displaces the trigger and allows the biasing spring to close the two cover portions. The guard is provided with a handle for grasping by a manipulator tool. In one embodiment the handle is provided with inner grooves for grasping by a shotgun stick. In another embodiment, an adapter releasably engages the handle and provides means for attachment to a hotstick.

A shotgun sighting device and method for sighting a shotgun with the eye of a gunner that is opposite the gun mounting shoulder of the gunner. The device is comprised of a linear sighting plane mounted by a plurality of bracket members to the barrel of a shotgun. The sighting plane has elongated mounting slots and for receiving mounting bolts for adjustably mounting the sighting plane to the bracket members in a position that is adjustably offset both horizontally and vertically from the barrel of the shotgun. The device provides a sighting plane for the gunner that is in alignment with the eye of the gunner that is opposite the gunner's gun mounting shoulder and thus provides a shotgun sighting aid for gunner's having impaired vision in their customary sighting eye.

A recoil reduction system for the front end of a firearm, such as a shotgun or a rifle. In a first embodiment, the recoil reduction structure is mounted in a handgrip member secured to the bottom surface of the forend member. Various types of springs and cylindrical elastomer members can be utilized in various handgrip members. In a second embodiment the recoil reduction system is mounted in the forend member. In a third embodiment, the recoil reduction structure is utilized with a rifle having a long gun stock. The long gun stock has a butt portion, a middle portion and a front portion. The front portion is located forwardly of the receiver. A primary recess is formed in the bottom wall of the front portion and the recoil reduction structure is mounted therein. A shock absorber for use on the butt of the stock of a rifle, such as a shotgun, that absorbs significant recoil force by means of a foam construction formed to have plural air-trapping chambers in the base, which base is positioned between the butt of the stock of said rifle or shotgun and the shoulder of the user. As the foam base compresses, the air in the plurality of air-trapping chambers (areas compressed); delaying and limiting rearward travel of the force transfer of the stock to the shoulder of the user. Vent nozzle holes in the base allow the air trapped in these chambers to be vented but at the delayed and controlled rate to the outside of the device. Thus, the recoil is brought to a slowed stop as the increase in pressure of the air in the air-trapping chambers slows and eventually matches the rate at which air is vented outside the device through the vent holes.
