An indirect gas operating system for an M4 type automatic or semi-automatic firearm. The indirect gas operating system has a gas block having a cylinder. The gas block is fitted to a barrel assembly having a bore with the cylinder in communication with the bore. A piston having a piston end and a striking end has the piston end fitted to the cylinder. A bolt assembly having a striking surface is provided. When a cartridge is fired, gas displaces the piston end and causes the striking end to strike the striking surface displacing the bolt assembly. The cylinder and the piston are together removable as an assembly from the firearm without removal of the gas block.

The coupling assembly is engagable with a bottom portion of the barrel nut and is attached to the rearward end of the upper portion. A hand guard attachment assembly for a firearm having a barrel and a receiver fastened to the barrel by a barrel nut. The hand guard attachment assembly includes a forearm having a monolithic mounting rail / hand guard that is removably connected to the receiver. The monolithic rail / hand guard interfaces with an integral multi-slot mounting portion of the receiver. A tactical foregrip assembly for use with a firearm, the assembly having an independently rotatable grip mount assembly and an independently rotatable light mount assembly. The invention comprises a stationary mount assembly attachable to the receiver of a firearm, a grip mount assembly radially rotatable about and electrically coupled to the stationary mount assembly, and a light mount assembly radially rotatable about and electrically coupled to the stationary mount and engagable with said grip assembly. The present invention allows the operator to provide light to illuminate an area while simultaneously positioning himself in a manner so as to maximally use available cover.

A firearm can have a backbone, a barrel, a swinging wedge, and a barrel latch, in accordance with one or more embodiments. The barrel latch can be in mechanical communication with the swinging wedge. The barrel latch can have a first position and a second position and the swinging wedge can be configured to maintain attachment of the barrel to the backbone when the barrel latch is in the first position and is configured to release the barrel from the backbone when the barrel latch is in the second position. Thus, the firearm can provide quick barrel changes. Other features enhance the reliability and utility of the firearm.

In one embodiment, a handguard system with clamp device for use on a firearm. The firearm has a barrel, an operating member and a receiver. The barrel and operating member are joined to the receiver. The handguard system includes a barrel nut, a tubular handguard, a clamp device, and a low profile rail gas block. The barrel nut secures the barrel to the receiver and has an outer surface which lies inward of the operating member and engages the inner surface of the handguard. The handguard inner surface includes a groove for providing clearance to the operating member and gas block. The clamp device attaches to the handguard and includes an actuating screw and a spring loaded clamp pad which engages the barrel nut outer surface. The low profile rail gas block permits both interfacing accessories and rapid installation and removal of the handguard.

A modular hand guard assembly serves both as a hand guard system and as an integrated interface system for mounting various weapon accessories and attachments thereto.
