A detection system for remotely determining the speed of a rotating tool tip in a pneumatic dental handpiece. A means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool tip monitors a periodic mechanical function at the pneumatic hose connected to the handpiece. The monitored periodic mechanical function serves to provide feedback that is used to control the speed of the rotating tool tip. The means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool detects a mechanical function of the rotating tool tip, which in transmitted to a controller. The controller in turn regulates the operation of an air supply valve in response to the detected mechanical function. The valve regulates the flow of air to the handpiece. By continuously adjusting the flow of air through the valve into the pneumatic hose, the speed of the rotating tool is maintained at the desired cutting speed.

Method and apparatus for uniformly adding particulates to a coating on comestibles, and products produced thereby

A process for applying particulates to a large number of comestible cores during the production of comestible cores so as to have a generally uniform application of particulates on each coated core involves the steps of placing a batch of comestible cores in a coating apparatus; applying aliquots of coating syrup while the cores are tumbled in the coating apparatus to build up a coating on the cores; dividing a predetermined total amount of the particulates to be applied to the coated cores into at least three portions of approximately equal size; and applying each of the portions of particulates to the coated cores simultaneously from multiple, spaced apart, particulate distributors in the coating apparatus while the coated cores are being tumbled. Preferably the particulate applicator comprises a number of venturi eductors equal to the number of particulate distributors; a pneumatic hose connected between each venturi eductor and each particulate distributor; and a vibratory pan for holding a quantity of particulates and causing the particulates to vibrate and flow at a uniform rate into each venturi eductor. The process is particularly were suited to uniformly apply speckle particulates to produce coated chewing gum or other confectionery cores with a uniform number of speckles on each core.

A hollow double-acting cylinder assembly may be mounted over a shaft and to a housing. A moveable piston of the cylinder assembly connects to a sliding sleeve of an over-center mechanism and the sliding sleeve with a thrust bearing allowing it to push and pull the sleeve mechanism with cylinder action. A toggle action of the over-center mechanism locks clutch without the need to sustain pressure on the cylinder after engagement / disengagement motion. As the clutch is typically engaged for sustained periods of time, this prevents constant hydraulic pressure applied to the over-center mechanism and significantly reduces wear. Hydraulic / pneumatic hoses may pass through the housing and connect to engage and disengage bores of the cylinder via remotely actuated control valve(s).
