Compact suture punch with malleable needle

A suture punch system is capable of directly passing braided suture through tissue in a simple, one-step process. The system includes three principle components: a malleable needle with braided suture attached, a handheld instrument for grasping tissue and controlling needle placement, and a trocar to supply the force required for needle placement. Needle deformation begins at the tip of the instrument, which preferably includes a curved segment. As the distal tip of the needle pierces the tissue, it continues its radial path through the tissue. When the proximal end of the needle exits from the instrument, the needle is entirely radial in shape and traverses an essentially radial path through the tissue. Non-radial linear or non-linear segments may alternatively be used. In one embodiment, the tissue to be sutured is constrained by pressure applied through closure between an upper, moveable jaw the distal portion of the instrument which acts as a fixed jaw. The upper, movable jaw contains a shaped passageway which allows the curved needle to pass therethrough during use. Once the needle has passed entirely through the tissue it is ready for retrieval using the jaws of the punch or another instrument. Different needle designs and separate instruments are also disclosed.

Transcutaneous robot-assisted ablation-device insertion navigation system

A robotic system for overlapping radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in tumor treatment is disclosed. The robot assisted navigation system is formed of a robotic manipulator and a control system designed to execute preoperatively planned needle trajectories. Preoperative imaging and planning is followed by interoperative robot execution of the ablation treatment plan. The navigation system combines mechanical linkage sensory units with an optical registration system. There is no requirement for bulky hardware installation or computationally demanding software modules. Final position of the first needle placement is confirmed for validity with the plan and then is used as a reference for the subsequent needle insertions and ablations.

System and method for 3-d biopsy

A system and method (i.e, utility) are disclosed for positioning a needle in three-dimensions based on patient related statistics for extracting tissue during biopsy procedures. Aspects of the utility can be applied independently or serve as an aid to the urologist when regions of interest are hard to discern in an ultrasound image. Regions of interest that correspond to high cancer risk regions (e.g., statistically) are automatically superimposed on an ultrasound image of a patient in real time. Additionally a statistical map based on one or more demographic parameters of a patient and containing cancer probability locations are also automatically mapped on the ultrasound image in real time displaying potential cancer locations. Aspects of the system are also capable of displaying optimal needle placement positions based on statistical priors and will be able to accurately navigate the needle to that position for biopsy extraction and / or treatment.

An optical device is provided which assists in accurate placement of a needle into a human or animal diarthrodial joint. The device includes a handpiece which mounts a needle assembly including an optical guide. The optical guide, which is incorporated into the lumen of the needle, transmits light from the needle tip into the joint area and receives the scattered light that is returned. The handpiece is manipulated by the user to guide the needle during placement. The returned light is processed to determine whether the needle is placed in the joint itself rather than in a location adjacent to the joint and corresponding output is produced to aid the user in effecting proper needle placement. Such placement assists in the injection of fluid into or the removal of fluid form the joint.

The device includes a handpiece which mounts a needle assembly including an acoustic transducer assembly. The resultant ice thus produced by the cryosurgical probes is optimized for a specific patient.
