Method and Device For the Treating Sleep Apnea

An improved treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is disclosed. A method and various device combinations are presented. The device combinations describe optimal adjustments to properly position a nasal pillow in each of a patient's nares. A novel swivel joint is described to which a nasal pillow is slip-fit over. The swivel joint prevents loss of a proper seal between the nasal pillow and nare which may otherwise occur as a result of head movement. Also presented is an improved obturator mouthpiece design which substantially eliminates air flow through the oral cavity resulting from leakage in the oropharynx.

Orthonostric device and method of forming the same

There is herein described an orthonostric device in the form of a nasal stent for insertion in the nostril of a patient for the correction of abnormalities and stenosis of the nostril. The stent is formed so that it can be expanded or contracted laterally by means of a tool which permits adjustment without the removal of the stent. A wire retaining clip is affixed to the stent and extends about the alar crease of the nose for retention of the stent. A method of forming the stent is also described which involves taking a casting of the patient's nostril, forming a mold and placing a resin liquid mix therein. Before setting of the resin, a separator or divider is inserted in the mold to separate the stent into two halves which are joined by a jack screw at the proximal end to permit adjustment by means of the tool.

Oxygen delivery device for diffusing gas flow

A nasal cannula diffuses a gas stream to distribute the volume of the gas stream as it is delivered into a user's nostril. The nasal cannula can direct flow of gas, such as oxygen, away from the more sensitive nasal tissues. The nasal cannula can diffuse the gas flow out of a plurality of orifices formed in the nostril prongs of the nasal cannula device, rather than sending the entire volume of gas out of a single orifice, as is the case with conventional nasal cannula devices.

Apparatus and method for nasal passage rinse

An apparatus and method for preparing saline solution and using the saline solution for rinsing nasal passages. The apparatus includes a container (10) having sidewalls and opening for a removable cap (13). The cap has an external tapering hollow nozzle (14). The nozzle (14) is inserted into one end of a flexible tube (21). The other end of the tube (21) is inserted into a hollow removable contoured dispenser tip (23) which is shaped to fit a human nostril comfortably. A thin tubular conduit (19) is attached to the cap by means of a fitting (16) and the conduit extends into the container (10) close to its bottom when the apparatus is fully assembled. A saline solution is prepared by adding iodine free common salt to warm distilled or boiled water in the container. After attaching the cap (13) to the container (10) and inserting the dispenser tip (23) into one nostril, a user bends forward and tilts the head to the side of the other nostril and breaths through open mouth. The user then allows the saline solution to flow by gravity through one nostril and come out through the other open nostril, after passing through nasal passages, by holding the container (10) inverted (bottom up cap down) and raising it above the level of nostrils. The rate of flow of the saline solution to the nostril can be controlled by varying the height at which the container is held above the level of nostrils.

Dilated nasal sleep mask

The invention is an apparatus that blocks out light and improves breathing. The apparatus includes a sleep mask with an integral nasal dilation system. The nasal dilation system includes a nasal element mounted with on the nose section of the mask, where the nasal element in one version has a channel through which a band can move substantially orthogonal to the wearer's nose. Sidewalls center the band, and inward folded cuffs retain the band. The band encircles the wearer's head between the mask straps. It is threaded through the slideway and can slide therein equalizing side-to-side forces. The band is elastic and when stretched it generates an opposing force. Pressure is exerted on the nose by using the band in a stretched state. The extended band creates pressure on the slideway, which causes the nose section to press against the nostrils causing them to distend, which in turn dilates the nasal passages, and breathing is improved.

Breathing Aid Device that Decreases Incidence of Snoring

InactiveUS20080167676A1Comfortable to useNo point-source discomfortSurgeryDilatorsNasal passageNostril
An improved, preferably plastic, universal breathing aid device for insertion into the nasal passages having a first pair of septum-engaging and gripping arms, from which are cantilevered a pair of curved, spring-action nostril-expanding arm that keep the nasal passages open. The septum-engaging arms are supported by a base member in the form of an open loop that includes a living hinge to provide flexibility and accommodation to varying sizes of nasal septums. The flexibility of both sets of arms promotes user comfort. The living hinge urges the septum arms together to provide grip yet comfort via the flexibility of the hinge. The nostril-expanding arms act in the opposite direction, opening the airway. The contours of the arm and tip cross sections may be varied for comfort, and device may range from generally planar to three-dimensional. The inventive device is unobtrusive and easily kept sanitary.

Nostril dilator

A device for relieving congestion in restricted nasal passages, by the dilation thereof with an internal prosthesis placed within the nasal passages of an individual. This prosthesis comprises an adjustable bow having a pair of appendages extending from each end thereof. A separate tensioning element engages complimentary features on / in the bow to limit flexure thereof, and thereby provide a counterforce to bending of the bow. Accordingly, when the bow is flexed or bent, the extent of flex or bending of the bow is constrained by the tensioning element. The combined effect of the natural recoil of the resilient bow from the distended to flat position, combined with the counter forces imparted to the bow by the tensioning element, causes each appendage on the end of the bow to exert a constant pressure within each nasal passage to maintain such passages in a relatively open position.
