Storing log data efficiently while supporting querying

A logging system includes an event receiver and a storage manager. The receiver receives log data, processes it, and outputs a column-based data “chunk.” The manager receives and stores chunks. The receiver includes buffers that store events and a metadata structure that stores metadata about the contents of the buffers. Each buffer is associated with a particular event field and includes values from that field from one or more events. The metadata includes, for each “field of interest,” a minimum value and a maximum value that reflect the range of values of that field over all of the events in the buffers. A chunk is generated for each buffer and includes the metadata structure and a compressed version of the buffer contents. The metadata structure acts as a search index when querying event data. The logging system can be used in conjunction with a security information / event management (SIEM) system.

Page recovery using volume snapshots and logs

Systems and methods are disclosed that facilitate providing page-level database restore functionality upon detection of a corruption event. Updates to a data page in a database can trigger generation of a snapshot of the data page, and an update log can be maintained that stores information related to page updates. Subsequent snapshots can be generated at predetermined intervals and can trigger truncation of a log segment and initiation of a new log segment. Upon detection of page corruption, a most-recent uncorrupt snapshot of the corrupt page can be identified, copied to the location of the corrupt page in the database, and modified according to the log segment associated with the uncorrupt snapshot to make the page current as of the corrupting event, all of which can be performed to restore the database without having to take the database offline.

Well logging system for determining directional resistivity using multiple transmitter-receiver groups focused with magnetic reluctance material

An electromagnetic wave propagation resistivity borehole logging system comprising multiple groups of electromagnetic transmitter-receiver arrays operating at three frequencies. The borehole logging tool component of the system employs eight transmitters and four receivers. The transmitters and receivers are disposed axially and symmetrically along the major axis of the tool to form four group pairs. Each group pair consists of a transmitter-receiver groups axially and symmetrically on opposing sides of a reference point on the tool. Each, transmitter-receiver group consists of one transmitter assembly and two receiver assemblies. Each transmitter-receiver group is operated at two of three operating frequencies which are 100 kHz, 400 kHz and 2 MHz. Some of the transmitter and receiver assemblies are fabricated to yield azimuthally focused resistivity measurements, and to yield vertical and horizontal resistivity in anisotropic dipping beds. The system can be embodied as a logging-while-drilling system or as a wireline logging system.

Data logging system for implantable medical device

A data logging system and method in which an implantable medical device transmits logged data to an external data logging device with low energy potential signals. The implantable device generates potential signals modulated with digitally encoded data by operating a current source to cause corresponding electrical potentials that can be sensed at the skin surface by the external data logging device. The data logging device then demodulates the sensed potentials to derive the digital data and stores the data in a data logging storage medium.

Speed reporting for providing conditional driver treatment

A business process is disclosed whereby the driver of a motor vehicle receives conditional treatment from an external organization based on his or her driving habits as recorded by a speed detection and logging system on the driver's vehicle and then transmitted to the organization. An automobile insurance company may use this process to adjust insurance rates for a driver. A rental car company may use this process to offer lower rental rates and / or lower insurance rates to good drivers. A company employing professional drivers may use this process to monitor its drivers. Method and system for highly-parallel logging and recovery operation in main-memory transaction processing systems

An efficient logging method and system is disclosed that can be used to recover from a failure in a transaction system. It is based on a differential logging scheme that allows commutative and associative recovery operations. The method includes the steps of taking a before-image of the primary database in main memory before an update to the primary database; taking an after-image of the primary database after the update; generating a differential log by applying bit-wise exclusive-OR (XOR) between the before-image and the after-image; and performing either a redo or undo operation by applying XOR between said one or more logs and the before-image. Since XOR operations are commutative and associative, correct recovery is possible regardless of the creation sequence of log records. The present invention improves the performance of a logging system by reducing the size of log records and by allowing parallel execution of recovery operations.

Integrated logging for remote script execution

An integrated logging system includes a client-side logging component and a server-side logging component. The client-side logging component possesses the capability of logging client-side activity information, such as may relate to the execution of a script or other suitable client-side code that is controlled and executed independently of a remote server associated with the server-side logging component. The client-side logging component may also communicate logged activity information back to the corresponding server-side logging component. Messages including logged client-side activity information are received from the client-side logging component by the server-side logging component, and the logged activity information is integrated into the server-side log(s) of a server-side logging system. Thus, activity information from an independently controlled and operated processing device, which may be used, for example for problem determination, is integrated from sources that are distributed between systems.

Method and System for Estimating Unique Visitors for Internet Sites

This invention comprises a method and system for estimating unique visitors for Internet sites that is more accurate than the existing unique cookie / unique address counting methods. The invented method relies on the count of unique user identifiers (such as network addresses or preferably cookies)—I—that can be obtained from an existing cookie tracking / user access logging system. The number of unique visitors U is calculated substantially as a ratio of the count of unique cookies (or unique network addresses) to the number of visits N times the inflation factor X plus constant on that is approximately one (exactly one in the case of cookies). The number of visits is calculated by multiplying the sampling period t to the visitation frequency T1 minus one. The resulting estimate of the unique visitors is stable and does not diverge with sampling time unlike estimates directly obtained from the unique network address or unique cookie counts. The method is also applicable when there are multiple dominant visitation frequencies by accounting to the sum by all significant visitation frequencies. All key parameters of the method can be established before hand by mining a multitude of the site's historical visit logs and / or third party site access logs; the parameters can be corrected / calculated dynamically by mining the site's current access log (or current third party logs) while focusing on unambiguously identified visitors (such as return visitors identified by their login ID or unchanged cookie value).
