Determination of hydraulic properties such as porosity and permeability of soil is of paramount importance in hydrology and civil engineering. In order to achieve greater accuracy in determination of permeability of soil using falling head permeameter, the two important known constraints of human monitoring error in noting the falling water level between two selected levels and elapse time between these two levels had overcome through electronically sensing the levels between two selected points and activating the timer clock automatically by the pulses coming from senor. The precision in measurement of time lapse in 1 / 100th a second enables greater accuracy in estimation of permeability. Provision of perforated Teflon disc above and below the soil core facilitates in application of water uniformly over the entire surface area of soil core at top and similar way permeated water leaving the soil core uniformly without any obstruction. The use of carbon steel seamless tube while collecting soil core facilitated in undisturbed soil core recovery from desired depth section. The permeability test was conducted for various sorted sands of different size ranges and each sample was subjected to repetitive tests and elapsed time for each test was recorded from timer unit. The invention is a method of determining all the components of an absolute permeability tensor of a porous medium sample from permeability measurements, obtained for example by placing the sample in a permeameter which is useful for fast determination of permeability anisotropies of rocks and detention of internal heterogeneities. A pressure difference ΔP is applied between the inlet and outlet faces of a laboratory rock sample, with zero flow conditions on the edges parallel to the mean flow obtained by confining it in a sheath under pressure. Starting from conventional permeability measurements in three directions and from the measurements of the two components of the viscous forces transverse to the sample, a permeability tensor k can be “inverted” by numerical solution of the corresponding boundary-value problem. Since these quantities can be alternatively obtained from numerical solutions of the same flow in a heterogeneous medium, the method can also be used as an upscaling tool in a reservoir simulator.

The method comprises the steps of: repositioning all the push plates of an instrument to the initial positions; sticking annular rubber plates around the water inlet of a water inlet plate and the water outlet of a water outlet plate, placing a rubber plate in a test chamber to cover the front side, the bottom side and the back side of the instrument; placing a customized water bladder, successively placing a geotextile and an annular rubber plate on the water inlet surface side in the water bladder, and placing an annular rubber back on a water outlet surface side; injecting a material into the water bladder from the top; placing another rubber plate; disposing a whole sealing strip in a sealing groove on the top; disposing the upper cover of the instrument; applying a certain pressure to each push plate; filling the instrument with water, and carrying out a corresponding penetration test after saturation. Determination of hydraulic properties such as porosity and permeability of soil is of paramount importance in hydrology and civil engineering. In order to achieve greater accuracy in determination of permeability of soil using falling head permeameter, the two important known constraints of human monitoring error in noting the falling water level between two selected levels and elapse time between these two levels had overcome through electronically sensing the levels between two selected points and activating the timer clock automatically by the pulses coming from senor. The precision in measurement of time lapse in 1 / 100th of a second enables greater accuracy in estimation of permeability. Provision of perforated Teflon disc above and below the soil core facilitates in application of water uniformly over the entire surface area of soil core at top and similar way permeated water leaving the soil core uniformly without any obstruction. The use of carbon steel seamless tube while collecting soil core facilitated in undisturbed soil core recovery from desired depth section.
