The first plate has an upper surface and a sternum-contacting surface, and at least one hole passing through both of these surfaces for receiving a fastener head. The second plate has at least one attachment member for fixation to the sternum. A release member holds the first and second plates together, and is movably associated with at least one of the first and second plates such that it may be moved to allow separation of the two parts of the sternum.

Sternal closure device and method

A device and method for joining a severed sternum is disclosed. The device includes first and second bearing members, a sternum joining member having an axis and first and second ends, the first end connected to the first bearing member, the second bearing member adapted to engage the sternum joining member, and the sternum joining member is adapted to traverse the exposed cancellous surfaces of the sternal portions. The method includes moving the second bearing member along the axis of the sternum joining member toward the first bearing member, with the sternum joining member traversing the cancellous surfaces of both sternal portions, and securing the second bearing member on the axis of the sternum joining member so that the severed sternum is securely closed. A kit including sternal closure devices and other tools for closing a sternotomy is also disclosed.

A needle driving apparatus for sternal closure following sternotomy. Accessory elements include: 1) a straight surgical needle absent attached suture and 2) a separate suture carrying small cylinders at opposing ends. Apparatus provides a dual capability of 1) needle penetration of sternum from top surface and 2) precise positioning of cylinder at undersurface of sternum. When the lever is taken up by hand, motion is imparted to the arm and needle. The needle penetrates the sternum, then the cylinder, where it becomes locked therein by friction. Retrograde extraction of needle (using a conventional needle driver) delivers the suture by shuttle action to its desired position, atop the sternum. Repetition on the procedure described, on the opposing side of the sternum completes the placement of a single suture.

Directional positioning from the second electrode to the first electrode is substantially perpendicular to directional positioning from the third electrode to the first electrode. A circuit on the first substrate is connected to the electrodes and generates a first ECG channel measuring a difference in electric signals between the first electrode and the second electrode, and a second ECG channel measuring a difference in electric signals between the first electrode and the third electrode. A communication component on the substrate wirelessly transmits ECG information from the circuit to an external device.
