Body armor, also known as body armour, personal armor/armour, or a suit/coat of armour, is protective clothing designed to absorb or deflect physical attacks. Historically used to protect military personnel, today it is also used by various types of police (riot police in particular), private security guards or bodyguards, and occasionally ordinary civilians. Today there are two main types: regular non-plated body armor for moderate to substantial protection, and hard-plate reinforced body armor for maximum protection, such as used by combat soldiers.

Molded Torso-conforming body armor including method of producing same

InactiveUS20090255022A1Dissipate energy rapidlyFunction increasePersonal protection gearArmour platesFiberYarn
Molded body armor panels conformed to fit individual torsos based upon gender or, in custom applications, individual features of a particular male or female torso. The individual body panels are constructed of multiple layers of twill or other unconventional long float woven ballistic fibers with each layer impregnated with a curable adhesive. Additional reinforcement may be supplied in appropriate areas, such as breasts, spine, sternum and edges. The multiple impregnated layers of fabric are placed within a mold conforming to the particular torso contour desired. The long floats of the fabric allows the layers to stretch or compress as required to the particular shape desired. The adhesive is cured in the mold under low heat and low pressure, binding the layers of fabric together, as well as binding the conformed yarns of each individual layer in permanent contour. Interior and exterior coverings for comfort and appearance may be supplied.

Advanced body armor utilizing shear thickening fluids

ActiveUS20050266748A1High strengthNot impede fabric flexibilityPersonal protection gearBeltsEngineeringBody armor
An armor composite material has been invented which contains a ballistic fabric which has been impregnated with shear thickening fluid. This invention offers a ballistic resistant material that is more flexible and less bulky than comparable, conventional ballistic fabric. The invented material offers superior ballistic performance compared to conventional ballistic fabric-based materials of equal thickness. The invented material can be applied to applications requiring armor that is compact and / or flexible, such as body armor, protective clothing and flexible protective devices and shields, and stab resistant clothing and devices.

Personal body armor

Personal body armor has hard armor plates on the front and back of the wearer which extend between a left vest section and a right vest section formed of soft armor. Foam pads are affixed to the interior of the vest sections which space the soft armor and the hard armor plates from the wearer's body and define multiple vertically extending air channels between the wearer and the hard armor plates and the interior of the soft armor. The air channels promote ventilation of the armor and cooling of the wearer. For additional comfort, the soft armor is formed of multiple conventional layers of ballistic material and a {fraction (1 / 16)} inch molded plastic layer. The hard armor plates are configured to avoid interference with the usual range of motion of the wearer.

Bullet deflection, fighting position body armor

Bullet Deflection, Fighting Position Body Armor incorporates a novel bullet defeat mechanism approach different than conventional armor's objective of stopping bullets. Many rifle bullets that are used for military assault rifles are designed to turn or tumble on contact allowing maximum energy to be imparted on the target in minimal penetration distance. Exploiting this bullet / rifle design, deflecting bullets becomes a new attractive solution rather than stopping bullets because significantly less weight required to deflect an "unstable" bullet. Fighting position body armor can be mounted on the user's arms, shoulders and helmet. These locations are not normally protected by conventional body armor thereby providing significant protection when the soldier is in firing / fighting positions. Designs can be made to integrate the Bullet Deflection, Fighting Position Body Armor areas of protection with conventional body armors to optimize weight and areas protected.

Armor vest with mechanical quick release mechanism

Bulletproof vests, body armor, and other tactical vests with quick release buckle mechanisms are described along with methods of their use. The multi-point buckle mechanisms release upon rotating a shaft, allowing the vest panels and straps to fall cleanly to the ground without knocking the wearer off balance. Waist belt clips allow a wearer to put the vest on over his or her head without engaging the emergency release, or the multi-point buckle mechanism can release only the waist straps upon rotating the shaft in the opposite direction. A flap protects the rotatable quick release mechanism from inadvertent activation.

Ballistic resistant body armor articles

ActiveUS20090282596A1Improved body armorArmourLayered productsFiberYarn
The present invention relates to body armor articles for resisting ballistic objects. The articles comprise woven fabric layers and sheet layers. The woven fabric layers are made from yarns having a tenacity of at least 7.3 grams per dtex and a modulus of at least 100 grams per dtex. The sheet layers comprise nonwoven random oriented fibrous sheets, each of the sheet layers comprising a uniform mixture of 3 to 60 weight percent polymeric binder and 40 to 97 weight percent non-fibrillated fibers. The woven fabric layers and the sheet layers are stacked together comprising a first core section which includes at least two repeating units of, in order, at least one of the woven fabric layers then at least one of the sheet layers. The sheet layers comprise 0.5 to 30 wt % of the total weight of the article.

Projectile resistant armor

A body armor assembly includes a plurality of rigid tiles that are supported in a manner to provide movement and flexibility while still providing the protection of rigid armor. In a disclosed example, a tile holder maintains a plurality of tiles in a selected alignment. The tile holder maintains a minimum overlap dimension between adjacent tiles. Some of the tiles are maintained by the tile holder in a manner that allows for the overlap dimension to increase beyond the minimum overlap dimension. In a disclosed example, at least two rigid layers have at least one ballistic material layer between them to provide a rigid armor material composition.

The present plate carrier includes front and rear panel sections with internal pockets for supporting ballistic plates and inserts, but positions the rear panel section to provide improved thoracic protection. The front and rear panel sections are suspended by shoulder straps, which connect to the rear panel section at a mid point below the top edge of the rear panel section. The mid point connection of the shoulder straps causes the rear panel section to ride higher than the front panel section and higher on the wearer's back thereby positioning the ballistic plate inside high on the wearer's back and providing better ballistic coverage of the wearer's upper thoracic area. One of the internal pockets of each panel section has facing strips of hook and loop material sewn around its inner periphery that adhere together around a ballistic plate to center and hold the plate in place within the pocket.

Thermally vented body armor

A modular and field adaptable body armor system includes a plurality of flexible, air-permeable, thermally vented plates arranged in fixed relationships that pro-vide flexible, modular, field-adaptable protection for the torso and extremities without excessive weight or heat bur-den. The TVA plates include protective cards suspended in a parallel, louvered relationship between inner and outer mesh layers, thereby permitting air to flow therebetween while providing a flexible, compressible, modular barrier that protects the torso and extremities against projectiles. In embodiments, the outer mesh layer resists penetration and compresses cards together to intercept a projectile that would otherwise pass therebetween. Protective cards can include thermally pressed and flexed laminated UHMWPE. TVA panels can be removed and exchanged in the field according to the requirements of each mission. In embodiments, the TVA plates are laced together and / or attached to an underlying fabric carrier garment.
