There is provided herein a sensor / monitor combination designed to reduce the risk of pressure ulcer occurrence in immobile patients, wherein the level of patient activity is tracked to determine whether or not that patient has exhibited sufficient activity to merit eliminating a scheduled assisted relocation to a new position. The instant device senses the time since a patient last relocated into a different sitting or lying position. If the patient has not moved during some predetermined time period, the nursing staff will be notified by the invention that it is time to manually reposition the patient. If the patient has significantly changed position during the predetermined time period and, thus, allowed previously compressed tissues to reoxygenate, the invention will not signal that a move is necessary, thereby eliminating the need in some cases to rouse the patient from an otherwise healing sleep.

Flexible sectioned arm with internal overbending-prevention sleeves

A flexible, sectioned plastic arm for a showerhead comprises a series of interconnected ball-and-socket (B&S) sections (10) with a proximal (shower pipe) end piece (12) and a distal (showerhead) end piece (14). Each B&S section has a proximal (cup or socket) end (10S) and a distal (ball) end (10B). The proximal end piece has a proximal end with female threads which can be screwed onto a shower pipe and a ball-shaped distal end for snapping into the socket of the most proximal section of the shower arm. The distal end piece has a proximal end with a socket for snapping onto the most distal end section of the shower arm and a distal end with male threads (12T) which can be screwed onto the showerhead. The arm has a through hole containing a series or chain of cylindrical brass or other metal sections, tubes, or sleeves (16). These prevent the arm from being bent too far, thereby to keep the B&S from separating. The two end tubes abut a pair of respective resilient spacers (18) or springs (18S), which in turn abut shoulders in the end pieces to keep the series of tubes in place. Inside the series of tubes is a flexible plastic tube (20) for carrying the water without leakage. A T-shaped end fitting (20T) is attached to each end of the plastic tube. These end fittings hold the tube in the arm. The top arm of the T of the distal end fitting sits in the bottom of the female threaded end of the proximal end piece. The top arm of the T of the distal end fitting sits on the very end of the male threaded end of the distal end piece.

Software running on the user's computer generates reminders and / or to forces an individual to periodically readjust the height of the workstation in a manner that promotes standing while at work. A current position, and an elapsed time that the workstation has been at the current position, is detected with an objective of providing pre-programmed routine or random automated reminders to a user to change the current position of the workstation from one elevation state to the other. The software tracks the percent of time that a user is standing and optionally compares this with a pre-defined goal. Automatic control via the user workstation, of workstation elevator actuators is provided in a manner that makes it easier, or otherwise unavoidable, for the user to initiate repositioning from a sitting to a standing position.

If desired, the foot cradle device may be removed for bathing or other purposes, and the foot cradle device will retain its custom size thus saving the patient time and effort when replacing the foot cradle device on the foot or cast.

A winged submersible having a neutral to positive buoyancy utilizes an inverted wing structure to allow the wings to create downward force on the submersible in response to forward movement. Internal pressure pods are provided to allow an occupant to maintain a recumbent sitting position. A manually operable standing wheelchair includes an actuator for moving an occupant from a sitting position to a standing position. The manually operable standing wheelchair has a lifting mechanism, including, for example, a ratchet, cable, pulley, and telescopic tubes, which the occupant may manually operate to shift from the sitting position to the standing position. There is also a drive system to enable the occupant to manually move himself or herself in and the wheelchair from the sitting position to the standing position, or in any position in between. A dual lumen gravity oriented breast prosthesis or implant for surgical implantation includes inner and outer lumens which are defined by inner and outer closed envelopes of a medical grade elastomer. The outer closed envelope or lumen defines a generally oval or tear-shape with upper and lower portions. The outer envelope also contains a quantity of fluid material as for example a silicone gel having a first density. The prosthesis also includes a second or inner lumen defined by a second closed envelope of medical grade elastomer which is disposed in and fixed in the lower portion of the outer closed envelope. The inner lumen may be of various shapes such as generally spherical or preferably crescent shape. The second lumen is filled with a saline solution which has a density which is greater than the density in the outer lumen. The inner lumen with its greater density maintains or returns the prosthesis to its predetermined orientation when an individual in whom the prosthesis is implanted is in a standing or sitting position.
