According to the invention there is provided a computer implemented method for provisioning broadband service in a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) network. A PPPoE session is established, and a username is randomly chosen from a list of usernames stored on a modem. An authentication request is then transmitted from the modem to a Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) over a PPPoE network. The BRAS subsequently load balances the authentication request between the multiple Broadband Service Nodes (BSNs) and transmits the authentication request to one of the multiple BSNs determined by the load balancing. The modem then receives authorization from at least one of the multiple BSNs. The authorization preferably comprises a temporary dynamic Internet Protocol (IP) address. Full configuration details, including a static IP address, are then obtained from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). A network connection that uses a connection protocol for discovery, operation, and tear-down may call for a server timeout period when the network connection is abnormally terminated. For example, when a tear-down message is not transmitted to end a session when a fault occurs, a server device may require a time-out period to expire before a reconnection is allowed. A client device starting a new session may store connection details from the most recent session and send the tear-down message associated with the previous session to interrupt any current timeout period caused by a previous bad disconnect. A handling method for PPPOE (point-to-point protocol over Ethernet) access network anomaly of an IP (Internet protocol) set top box comprises the steps of assembling and sending PPPOE PADT (PPPOE active discovery terminate) messages to inform a broadband remote access server (BRAS) server of linkage interrupt according to linkage session identification numbers stored in a nonvolatile memory in the IP set top box and verification information before connecting an Internet protocol television (IPTV) operating hosted network through PPPOE dial-up when the IP set top box is started up; and updating new linkage session identification numbers and verification information to the nonvolatile memory in the IP set top box after connecting the IPTV operating hosted network through PPPOE dial-up. The problem that collision errors are caused due to two-time connection and simultaneous sessions of an identical PPPOE account which may occur when the set top box is restarted abnormally and a last session is not ended can be effectively solved through the handling method, and accordingly user experience is improved.
