Methods, apparatus, and business techniques are disclosed for use in mobile network communication systems. A mobile unit such as a smart phone is preferably equipped with a wireless local area network connection and a wireless wide area network connection. The local area network connection is used to establish a position-dependent ecommerce network connection with a wireless peripheral supplied by a vendor. A negotiation sequence is carried out to electronically contract the services of the negotiated wireless peripheral from the vendor. The mobile unit is then temporarily augmented with the added peripheral services supplied by the negotiated wireless peripheral. In one example, a smart phone with Internet capability is temporarily augmented with a full sized display monitor, a keyboard and a mouse so that a business user in an airport can work on desktop applications. In other examples, the negotiated wireless peripheral is a general product or service vending device and the mobile unit acts as a digital authentication and payment device with digital cash and / or credit payment capabilities.

Method of authenticating universal serail bus on-the-go device

A method for authenticating a universal serial bus on-the-go device is provided. A first device and a second device connected via a universal serial bus supporting an on-the-go protocol are provided. The first device is a host and the second device is a peripheral device. The host uses an authentication rule to determine whether the peripheral device is an authentic device. When the peripheral device is an authentic device, the host sends an enable signal to the peripheral device to perform a host negotiation protocol so that the first device changes role to the peripheral device and the second device changes role to the host; and when the peripheral device is not the authentic device, the host declines to perform the host negotiation protocol with the peripheral device. Hence, the data security of the USB host is enhanced. The data security of the USB peripheral device can also enhanced by providing the authentication mechanism before the USB device (peripheral device) has been accessed by the other devices (e.g., the USB host) in order to prevent the unauthorized user from accessing the data in the USB peripheral device.

The host accesses the provider as if the provider were a set of peripheral devices attached to the host. Cloud powered system enabling mobile devices to control peripherals without drivers

Smart devices including smart phones and tablets are getting more powerful and become versatile enough to replace conventional personal computers. Despite the rapid evolution of capabilities of such devices, controlling peripherals such as networked printers is infeasible due to lack of dedicated drivers to communicate with peripherals. To immediately enable smart devices to operate peripherals, a cloud-powered system, CloudBridge, is suggested. A CloudBridge application miming on a smart device works as a TCP bridge relaying packets between two TCP tunnels connected to a networked peripheral on one side and a cloud server on the other side. Through the bridge, issuing operations from a smart device without having drivers becomes possible by asking the cloud server to interpret the operations to a language that the peripheral can understand, CloudBridge further optimizes user experience by using data compression that is adaptively applied by a decision function. The system implemented in Android phones and Linux servers is demonstrated to control networked printers on smart phones and tablets. The decision function is shown to optimize QoE metrics, such as response time and energy consumption though extensive evaluations.
