The ischium ( /ˈɪskiəm/) forms the lower and back part of the hip bone (os coxae). Situated below the ilium and behind the pubis, it is one of these three bones whose fusion creates the hip. The superior portion of this bone forms approximately one third of the acetabulum.

Method and apparatus for treating pelvic organ prolapse

A method of treating pelvic organ prolapse is provided. The method generally includes the steps of establishing a first pathway between the external perirectal region of the patient to the region of the ischial spine in tissue on one side of the prolapsed organ, followed by establishing a second pathway in tissue on the contralateral side of the prolapsed organ. A support member, which includes a central support portion and two end portions, is positioned in a position to reposition said prolapsed organ in said organ's anatomically correct location. The end portions of the support member are introduced through the respective tissue pathways, followed by adjustment of the end portions so that the support member is located in a therapeutic relationship to the prolapsed organ that is to be supported. An apparatus and kit for said treatment is further provided.

Implant anchoring device

An anchor for securing an implant within bone. In one embodiment, the anchor is used to aid in securing an acetabular cup within an acetabulum. The anchor may be implanted within an ischial defect of the pelvis, and is attached to an outer surface of the acetabular cup shell. The anchor is made at least in part of, and may be made entirely of, a porous metal material to facilitate the ingrowth of surrounding bone into the anchor for osseointegrating the anchor into the surrounding bone. The anchor may be secured to the acetabular shell by a screw fastener or by cement, for example. The anchor may be secured to the acetabular shell before the anchor and the acetabular shell are together implanted into the acetabulum, or the anchor may be implanted into the ischial defect, followed by seating the acetabular shell in the acetabulum and then securing the acetabular shell to the anchor.

Contoured seat cushion and method for offloading pressure from skeletal bone prominences and encouraging proper postural alignment

A support contour of a cushion, such as a wheelchair cushion, defines relief areas at locations adjacent to skin covering the ischial tuberosities, the greater trochanters and the coccyx and sacrum of a person sitting on the support contour. Support areas of the support contour transfer force into the pelvic area adjacent to skin covering tissue masses on opposite lateral sides of the posterior buttocks and beneath the proximal thighs of the person. Greater clearance is also provided in the perineal area. Risks of pressure ulcers from pressure and shear forces on bony prominences is reduced while providing support at the broader areas without bony prominences in such a manner to encourage postural alignment. The risks of skin breakdown perineal are diminished.

Mobile body unweighted sit and stand chair assembly and method of operation

A mobile body unweighted sit and stand chair assembly prevents repetitive stress from sitting, standing, and lifting objects for long periods. The assembly provides a vertically, rotatably, and pivotally adjustable seat, a restrictive support padding that rotates from a support bracket to selectively support the spine or the pelvis, and a frame for structural integrity, mobility, and steering. The seat supports the buttocks and the ischium region of the pelvis, tilting forward up to 35 degrees to abut the pelvis against the support padding. This forward position maintains the spine in a straight posture and forces open posterior intervertebral disc space. The seat is supported by an adjustable rod that supports the weight of user while sitting, walking, kneeling, or lifting. A frame includes wheels that enable mobility and a brake. A first bracket enables feet to steer for hands-free maneuverability. A second bracket provides balance during kneeling and lifting.

Patient-specific guidance system and acetabular component with offset stems for hip arthroplasty

A method provide a patient-specific guidance system developed from 3D bone models, which are generated based on the patient's 2D image data. The surgical guide that is generated from this 3D data has an exterior surface that conforms to the interior surface of the acetabulum of an individual patient. Once this custom guide is placed into the patient's acetabulum, desired 3D implant position data can be transferred from the preoperative image to the acetabulum during an operation. The custom made guide allows surgeons to place guide rods into either the acetabulum itself, or into the sidewall of the pelvis (ileum or ischium) according to a preoperative plan. This guiding system is also coupled with an offset stemmed acetabular component to allow precise implantation and secure fixation of an acetabular component in a predetermined 3-D position relative to the pelvis.
