Fracture in the upper part of the femur.

Method and apparatus for reducing femoral fractures

An improved method and apparatus for reducing a hip fracture utilizing a minimally invasive procedure which does not require incision of the quadriceps. A femoral implant in accordance with the present invention achieves intramedullary fixation as well as fixation into the femoral head to allow for the compression needed for a femoral fracture to heal. To position the femoral implant of the present invention, an incision is made along the greater trochanter. Because the greater trochanter is not circumferentially covered with muscles, the incision can be made and the wound developed through the skin and fascia to expose the greater trochanter, without incising muscle, including, e.g., the quadriceps. After exposing the greater trochanter, novel instruments of the present invention are utilized to prepare a cavity in the femur extending from the greater trochanter into the femoral head and further extending from the greater trochanter into the intramedullary canal of the femur. After preparation of the femoral cavity, a femoral implant in accordance with the present invention is inserted into the aforementioned cavity in the femur. The femoral implant is thereafter secured in the femur, with portions of the implant extending into and being secured within the femoral head and portions of the implant extending into and being secured within the femoral shaft.

Interlocking intramedullary rod assembly for proximal femoral fractures, including unstable hip fractures

An interlocking intramedullary rod assembly for treating a fracture of a bone, the interlocking intramedullary rod assembly comprising: an intramedullary rod comprising a distal section and a proximal section; a distal interlocking screw comprising a distal end and a proximal end; and a proximal interlocking screw comprising a distal end and a proximal end; wherein the distal section of the intramedullary rod comprises a static distal seat for receiving the distal interlocking screw, and the proximal section of the intramedullary rod comprises a dynamic proximal seat for receiving the proximal interlocking screw; and further wherein the static distal seat is configured to secure the distal interlocking screw to the intramedullary rod such that the distal interlocking screw cannot move relative to the intramedullary rod, and the dynamic proximal seat is configured to secure the proximal interlocking screw to the intramedullary rod such that the angle between the distal end of the proximal interlocking screw and the proximal section of the intramedullary rod can be reduced but not increased. The proximal interlocking screw can provide dual plane compression at the fracture site, which includes linear compression at the fracture site and angular compression at the fracture site. The angular compression can be effected either during the surgery or after the surgery when the patient weightbears.

Hip fracture device with static locking mechanism allowing compression

In one embodiment, the present invention is a method of fusing fractures of a femoral neck using a bone plate including the steps of: placing a bone plate on the femur; inserting an assembly of a bone screw and a locking ring in an opening in the plate; simultaneously threading the locking ring and the bone screw in the femur; threading the bone screw in the femur to compress the fracture; creating a space between the locking ring and the bone screw; and allowing the bone screw to move towards the locking ring when the femur is loaded. In another embodiment, the present invention is a bone plating system including a bone plate having a plurality of openings; at least one bone screw capable of being received through the opening and into a bone; at least one end cap fixedly insertable in the opening; and a layer of polymeric material interposed between the end cap and the top of the head.
