3434 results about "Heterogeneous network" patented technology

A heterogeneous network is a network connecting computers and other devices with different operating systems and/or protocols. For example, local area networks (LANs) that connect Microsoft Windows and Linux based personal computers with Apple Macintosh computers are heterogeneous. The word heterogeneous network is also used in wireless networks using different access technologies. For example, a wireless network that provides a service through a wireless LAN and is able to maintain the service when switching to a cellular network is called a wireless heterogeneous network.

Efficient Handover of Media Communications in Heterogeneous IP Networks using LAN Profiles and Network Handover Rules

Methods and systems are provided for efficient handover of a media session between heterogeneous IP networks. A mobile device with Internet access can operate a software program to communicate with a corresponding node. The corresponding node may access the Internet through either a NAT router or a firewall. The mobile device establishes a media session with a corresponding node via the transmission of a first media stream and receipt of a second media stream, and a media control channel can optionally be implemented. The mobile device can acquire Internet access through a second IP address, and packets routed between the second IP address and the Internet may traverse a NAT router. The mobile device can evaluate the type of NAT at the second IP address from a stored LAN profile. A software routine can determine that handover of the media session from the first IP address to the second IP address is preferred. A software routine can determine efficient handover procedures according to Network handover rules. The mobile device may begin transmitting a third media stream to the corresponding node and the corresponding node can transmit a fourth media stream to the second IP address. A media control channel is optionally supported.

System and method for ensuring handoffs across heterogeneous networks

This invention provides a system, method and apparatus for facilitating handoffs from a first communication network to a second communication network, the first communication network and second communication network being heterogeneous with respect to each other. The system, method and apparatus may further include a contextual information server, which stores contextual elements corresponding to a user device and the operating environment of the user device, and a handoff decision function module that evaluates at least one of the contextual elements to determine whether to handoff user device communications from the first communication network to the second communication network. The method and apparatus may further include obtaining at least one contextual element corresponding to a user device and the operating environment of the user device, evaluating the at least one contextual element with a handoff decision function module to establish a handoff decision, establishing a handoff decision, and notifying the user device of the handoff decision. The method for facilitating handoffs from a first communication network to a second communication network may further include receiving a received signal strength indication, receiving a link quality determination, receiving a characteristic of the user device, and determining the location of the user device.

Multiprotocol intelligent household gateway apparatus and system thereof

The invention supports access and integration of multiple heterogeneous networks including a wireless network, an on-site bus, an Ethernet and the like, and provides a household gateway protocol conversion and configuration method and device, and a device description file. A configurable protocol method is mainly employed to solve the problem of conversion among multiple heterogeneous protocols. A gateway is provided with configurable protocol software, the software generates description files of various device protocols, and a protocol conversion driving file is generated through a configuration method according to protocol attributes by use of a software tool. The gateway, after loading the driving file, converts the driving file to a communication protocol which can be identified by a device and automatically maps to generate a unified TCP / IP protocol frame routing table. The description files, based on a ClassAD task description language, are used for providing a flexible and extensible heterogeneous network model to describe any services or data. The gateway, through identification and description of device information, determines the type and meaning of the information, omits information parsing, reduces the time for processing the information by the gateway, and improves the real-time performance of a system.
