3453 results about "Heterogeneous network" patented technology

A heterogeneous network is a network connecting computers and other devices with different operating systems and/or protocols. For example, local area networks (LANs) that connect Microsoft Windows and Linux based personal computers with Apple Macintosh computers are heterogeneous. The word heterogeneous network is also used in wireless networks using different access technologies. For example, a wireless network that provides a service through a wireless LAN and is able to maintain the service when switching to a cellular network is called a wireless heterogeneous network.

Multi-access terminal with capability for simultaneous connectivity to multiple communication channels

An apparatus is disclosed for permitting a mobile terminal having multiple, heterogeneous network connections (e.g., multiple wired or wireless transceivers of various types) to set up and maintain virtual connections over multiple networks to either the same or to multiple destinations. The mobile terminal can “load-share” traffic, i.e., it can distribute segments of traffic over a full set of heterogeneous networks, significantly improving the reliability and availability of communications. In a first embodiment, a mobile terminal is configured with multiple radio frequency (RF) transceivers. Operating system software is provided for dynamically establishing and maintaining traffic flow for user applications over multiple communications paths, and for automatically adapting to variations in the networking environment, application traffic flow requirements, end user preferences, or mobility. In a second embodiment, a software-defined radio is used to implement the physical layer protocols for each desired network, eliminating the need for multiple transceivers.

Efficient Handover of Media Communications in Heterogeneous IP Networks using LAN Profiles and Network Handover Rules

Methods and systems are provided for efficient handover of a media session between heterogeneous IP networks. A mobile device with Internet access can operate a software program to communicate with a corresponding node. The corresponding node may access the Internet through either a NAT router or a firewall. The mobile device establishes a media session with a corresponding node via the transmission of a first media stream and receipt of a second media stream, and a media control channel can optionally be implemented. The mobile device can acquire Internet access through a second IP address, and packets routed between the second IP address and the Internet may traverse a NAT router. The mobile device can evaluate the type of NAT at the second IP address from a stored LAN profile. A software routine can determine that handover of the media session from the first IP address to the second IP address is preferred. A software routine can determine efficient handover procedures according to Network handover rules. The mobile device may begin transmitting a third media stream to the corresponding node and the corresponding node can transmit a fourth media stream to the second IP address. A media control channel is optionally supported.

Unified, configurable, adaptive, network architecture

A network switch having a unified, adaptive management paradigm for wireless network devices is disclosed. The switch includes configurable ports for connecting devices. A software application running on the switch allows a network administrator to selectively configure each port to support either a wired device or wireless device. Configuration information and software images that are needed for operation of the wireless device are associated with the port. When a wireless device is first plugged into the switch port, it downloads its configuration directly from the switch port. By storing the configuration information and images at the switch and automatically downloading them to the wireless devices, the task of configuring the devices is greatly simplified for the network administrator. This is particularly advantageous in heterogeneous network environments that support both wired and wireless devices, and where wireless device are readily moved to different ports.

Wireless telecommunications system and method of operation providing users' carrier selection in overlapping hetergenous networks

An improved wireless telecommunication system enables a user to obtain communication services in overlapping wireless heterogeneous or homogeneous cellular networks at the most economical cost and bandwidth. A plurality of overlapping cellular networks includes a common command channel, a Central Selection Agency (CSA), a home location register, a visitor location register, and a user device positional location mechanism. In one embodiment the user device is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine its location. In placing a call, the user device broadcasts its ID, location and connection capability requirements on the common command channel. When a base station for the command channel bears the request, the CSA and the home location register for the user are informed. The CSA capability / requirements determine which network and base station selections are potential carriers for the call. Based on user preferences established by a profile stored in an accessible database, the CSA assigns a network and base station to handle the connection. The user device is informed and tunes to the appropriate network and protocols. For incoming calls, the calling party checks the home location register to determine the last known location. The user device is informed that a called is waiting. The user device selects the network and base station to receive the call in a fashion similar to that of placing the call. A call may be transferred from one network to a different network, the networks using different protocol. The user device may be programmed to change networks at random times to provide enhanced security for a call.

Distributed open writable snapshot copy facility using file migration policies

A read-write snapshot copy facility is constructed from a hierarchical storage management facility. The read-write snapshot copy file system initially comprises stub files pointing to the files in a read-only snapshot copy file system. When an application writes to a file in the read-write snapshot copy, the read-write snapshot copy facility migrates a copy of the file to replace the stub file, and then writes to the migrated file. Because the read-write snapshot copy facility references the files in the read-only snapshot file system in a network namespace using standard protocols such as NFS or CIFS, the read-write snapshot copy facility permits referencing of distributed read-only snapshot file systems in an open (heterogeneous) network environment, and the read-write snapshot copy is scalable by linking the read-write snapshot copy facility to multiple file servers containing read-only snapshot file systems.
