Document re-authoring systems and methods for providing device-independent access to the world wide web

An automatic re-authoring system and method re-author a document originally designed for display on a desktop computer screen for display on a smaller display screen, such as those used with a PDA or a cellular telephone. The automatic re-authoring system and method input a document to be re-authored and re-authoring parameters, such as display screen size, default font and the like. The automatic re-authoring system and method convert the document into a number of pages, where each page is fully displayable with only at most a minimal amount of scrolling on the display screen of the PDA or cellular phone. At each stage of the re-authoring, a number of different transformations are applied to the original document or a selected re-authored page. The selected re-authored page is the best page resulting from the previous re-authoring stage. The best page at each stage is determined based on the re-authoring parameters and the content of the document being re-authored.

Pen Tracking and Low Latency Display Updates on Electronic Paper Displays

A system and a method are disclosed for fast pen tracking a low latency display updates on an electronic paper display. Pen input information is received on an electronic paper display that updates at a predetermined display update rate. A line drawing module of the electronic paper display driver determines at least one pixel to activate based on the received pen input information. The at least one pixel is updated independent of the display update rate of the electronic paper display. Active pixel state information is maintained separately for each pixel in real time until the pixel update is complete and the pixel is deactivated. In some embodiments, a future pixel to activate is determined based on the received pen input information. The future pixel is deactivated if pen input information is not received on the activated pixel for a predetermined amount of time.

Method and system for controlling a complementary user interface on a display surface

An alternate display content controller provides a technique for controlling a video display separately from and in addition to the content displayed on the operating system display surface. Where the display is a computer monitor, the alternate display content controller interacts with the computer utility operating system and hardware drivers to control allocation of display space and create and control one or more parallel graphical user interfaces in addition to the operating system desktop. An alternate display content controller may be incorporated in either hardware or software. As software, an alternate display content controller may be an application running on the computer operating system, or may include an operating system kernel of varying complexity ranging from dependent on the utility operating system for hardware system services to a parallel system independent of the utility operating system and capable of supporting dedicated applications. The alternate display content controller may also include content and operating software delivered over the Internet or any other LAN. The alternate display content controller may also be included in a television decoder/settop box to permit two or more parallel graphical user interfaces to be displayed simultaneously.

Regulation of navigation speed among displayed items and tilt angle thereof responsive to user applied pressure

An electronic device can include a touch sensitive display screen and a controller circuit. The touch sensitive display screen identifies a location where a user is pressing and generates a force signal that indicates how hard the user is pressing. The controller circuit controls a speed at which information items are scrolled across the screen and controls a tilt angle of the displayed information items responsive to the force signal. The controller circuit graphically renders the tilt angle on the screen by tapering width of the displayed information items in a defined direction and regulates the tapered width responsive to the force signal. No tilt angle is rendered when the force signal indicates that the user is not pressing the screen. The scrolling speed and the tilt angle of the displayed information items are increased, to provide a visual indication to the user of the increased scrolling speed, responsive to the force signal indicating that the user is pressing harder against the screen.

Display device

A reduction in the weight of a display device with a touch sensor is achieved while a decrease in the sensitivity thereof is suppressed. The display device includes, between a pair of substrates, a touch sensor, a color filter, and a display portion provided with a display element. A stress relief layer whose product of the dielectric constant and specific gravity is smaller than that of the substrate provided with the touch sensor is provided, whereby parasitic capacitance between an electrode and a wiring included in the touch sensor and an electrode and a wiring included in the display portion can be reduced.
