A method and apparatus for monitoring the movement of an object traversing a circuit and outputting data with respect thereto. Lap events are recorded and used to calculate a total lap count, split time, and elapsed time for an event that includes the repetitive traversing of a circuit. Physiologic data is monitored in the case where the object is a person. A transponder or transmitter is affixed to a user and a signal having limited range is coupled to a communications and display device when the user comes into range of the device. Each such coupling is accumulated as lap event data. Calculations are made to display the lap count and timing information as well as physiologic data. In one embodiment, the device is implemented in a watertight housing and placed at the bottom of a swimming pool. The displayed information is visible to a swimmer wearing the transponder or transmitter. In another embodiment, the display is incorporated into eyewear worn by the person traversing a repetitive circuit.

This application describes a garment (e.g. a swim suit) having a base layer of stretchable elasticated fabric, the base layer having a torso portion that covers at least a part of the torso of a person when the garment is worn. An inner core layer of stretchable elasticated fabric is bonded to the inner surface of the base layer to extend around the abdomen and lower back regions of the garment. By providing a double layer of stretchable elasticated fabric in this manner, more compression is applied to the abdomen of the person (e.g. swimmer) wearing the suit, bringing about improvements in form drag. The additional support provided to the lower back and abdomen also improves core stability, which is of benefit in many sporting activities, including swimming.

A semirigid swim cap (100) is disclosed, having a unitary construction. The swim cap is generally open at the bottom and includes a forward edge (104), a rearward edge (106), oppositely disposed ear cover portions (108), and a center portion (101). In a preferred embodiment, the swim cap is made from an elastomeric thermoplastic and the center portion is relatively thick, while the peripheral edge portions are relatively thin and therefore less rigid. A waterproof recreational audio device and method that transmits sound via transcutaneous bone conduction provides high fidelity musical signals to a user. The device can be worn on the head of a user and integrated into various types of headgear. The device is tunable for sound quality and comfort by adjusting and moving the sound transmitting transducers around the head of the user. The present invention uses commercially available transducers to produce sounds in the low, mid and high frequency ranges. A sound source for the musical signal can also be provided as part of the waterproof recreational audio device. Controls enable the user to select volume levels for the high, mid and low frequency ranges, while a volume limiter restricts the mid range to a preset maximum volume level to allow external ambient sounds to be heard via the ear canal and protects the hearing of the user.
