Chlorine dioxide generation

A method of producing a stream of aqueous chlorine dioxide sterilizing fluid suitable for use in sterilizing medical and dental equipment or for wound irrigation or skin asepsis is described. Steps are: pumping fluid portions of a first reagent and a second reagent into the proximal end of an elongate reaction chamber (24) to form a reaction mixture, the reagents being selected to react together to form aqueous chlorine dioxide; providing a stream of water around or adjacent to the distal end of the reaction chamber (24); continuing to pump fluid portions of said reagents so as to cause the reagent mixture to travel through the reaction chamber and then into the stream of water to form a stream of aqueous chlorine dioxide sterilizing fluid; wherein the pumping rates and the internal dimensions of the elongate reaction chamber (24) are selected so that the reaction to form chlorine dioxide is substantially complete when the reagent mixture exits the reaction chamber (24); and continuing pumping fluid portions of said reagents until a desired quantity of said sterilizing fluid has been produced; wherein the pumping of each reagent is carried out by means of a diaphragm pump (90, 92) or a piston pump via a pressure-control valve (32, 34) so that each fluid portion is pumped at substantially constant pressure.

Wash Basin Being Transformable to be Particularly Adapted for Wound Irrigation

A hospital-grade basin holds water for washing patients, or alternatively converts easily / quickly for a patient's limb to rest comfortably within and across a portion of the basin. In a first embodiment, half-moon shaped openings on opposite sides of the basin side walks) comfortably support the limb at a reduced height with respect to adjacent side wall portions, which serve as a partial shield during wound irrigation, and aid fluid collection. The shaped openings may each be sealed with a hinged door in a closed position, using a friction fit, to form the traditional, watertight basin. In an alternate embodiment, the doors may be secured in the closed position using an elastomeric leaf-spring-shaped member. In other embodiments, rather than cutouts and doors, opposing portions of the side wall may instead be formed of an over-molded elastomeric material that conforms to the patient's limb, or may instead be formed like a bellows.

Wound irrigation splashback shield

A splashback shield for attachment to a syringe for wound irrigation includes a generally dome-shaped shield with a conduit or tunnel through the top that narrows to form a nozzle as it extends substantially inside the shield. A number of air vents or passageways surround the conduit so when submerging and re-filling the syringe with irrigant with the shield attached any air trapped inside the shield escapes rather than drawn into the syringe. The air vents are preferably elongate tubular passageways that narrow exiting the shield, facilitating air escaping but the irrigant mixed with any blood and contamination tends not to pass through the vents. The device is an improvement over the conventional Zerowet® Splashield® product.
