Obscuring identification information in an image of a vehicle

What is disclosed is a system and method for processing an image to obscure information which can be used for identification purposes. In one embodiment, an image is received as part of a traffic enforcement activity. A motor vehicle in the image has a visibly discernible license plate. The vehicle's license plate is first isolated in the image. Content in the image which can be used for identification purposes is thereafter identified. The identified content is compared to the license plate. Any content in the image which is different than the license plate is obscured by, for instance, pixelating the content in the image, introducing a distortion into the image at a location of the content, replacing content with other content, or by blurring the content of the image. The modified image containing the obscured content is then provided to an image output device for rendering. Various embodiments are disclosed.

A system and method for determining the state of a traffic signal light, such as being red, yellow, or green, by employing a plurality of traffic enforcement cameras to be used in determining if a traffic violation has occurred. The system and method automatically predicts, tacks and captures violation events, such as violating a red traffic signal light, to use the video for any number of reasons, particularly for traffic enforcement purposes. There may be provided a tracking camera, a signal camera and an enforcement camera used to capture the video and other pertinent information relating to the event. The signal camera may be operatively connected to a processing unit that runs a video signal sensing (VSS) software unit to determine the active state of the system. Traffic light signal monitoring system

A traffic light signal monitoring system and method that enables traffic enforcement personnel to monitor the traffic moving through an intersection while positioned at a distant or remote location from the intersection where they would otherwise not be able to see the color of the traffic light signal. The system includes a distribution switch mounted in an existing traffic signal controller cabinet and electrically connected to the traffic light control circuits. The distribution switch is coupled to a radio transmitter. Connected to the transmitter is a tone generator that generates a tone when the amber light signal is activated. During use, traffic enforcement personnel positioned near the intersection are able to watch traffic travel through the intersection without looking directly at the lights activated on the traffic light. When the amber light circuit is activated, the tone is broadcast for approximately four seconds that informs the traffic enforcement personnel that the red light will be activated shortly and that their attention should be drawn to the flow of traffic through the intersection.

A traffic localization module uses the refined correspondence estimates to determine locations of vehicles in the environment in three dimensions to automatically determine a traffic scenario according to the locations of vehicles.
