A breathable composite sheet material, a method for making such a sheet material, and an absorbent article utilizing the sheet material are provided. The composite sheet material is comprised of a thermoplastic film adhered directly to a fibrous substrate. The substrate comprises a fibrous web of at least 50% by weight of polyolefin polymer synthetic fibers. The absorbent article comprises (a) a topsheet; (b) a backsheet; and (c) an absorbent core located between the topsheet and the backsheet; wherein the backsheet comprises the non-porous, substantially fluid impermeable, moisture vapor permeable composite sheet material described above. The composite sheet material is oriented such that the film layer of the composite sheet material faces toward the absorbent core. The absorbent article may comprise a disposable diaper.

Impact energy management method and system

An impact-absorbing protective structure comprises one or more compressible cells. Each cell is in the form of a thin-walled plastic enclosure defining an inner, fluid-filled chamber with at least one small orifice through which fluid resistively flows. Each cell includes an initially resistive mechanism that resists collapse during an initial phase of an impact and that then yields to allow the remainder of the impact to be managed by the venting of fluid through the orifice. The initially resistive mechanism may be implemented by providing the cell with semi-vertical side walls of an appropriate thickness or by combining a resiliently collapsible ring with the cell. After the initially resistive mechanism yields to the impact, the remainder of the impact is managed by the fluid venting through the orifice. The cell properties can be readily engineered to optimize the impact-absorbing response of the cell to a wide range of impact energies.

Protective headgear with improved shell construction

The protective helmet includes a rigid outer shell where the shell includes an undulating cross-sectional profile. A layer of impact-energy-absorbing material is positioned adjacent to the shell. The undulating profile of the shell can be any type of load spreading undulating profile, such as that of a sinusoidal or triangular wave configuration. The undulating load-spreading profile can be on the inner surface of the shell, on the outer surface of the shell or the entire cross-section of the shell may be undulating. The unique undulating profile makes the shell more rigid and spreads the impact load across the surface of the shell to thereby spread the deformation of the padding layer to prevent the shell from bottoming out of the impact-energy-absorbing material during an impact. As a result, a safer and more effective protective helmet is provided.

Bumper mounting structure

If an impact occurs with an impact energy which exceeds an elastic limit of a bumper while a shock-absorbing member is in a projected position, a bumper stay is forced to move rearward along a first actuating chamber to cause the shock-absorbing member to pivot to a received position. The impact energy is primarily absorbed by an elastic force of a first spring which biases the shock-absorbing member toward the projected position. When the impact energy is not thoroughly absorbed by the first spring, the shock-absorbing member fully pivots into its received position by the bumper stay which is continuously moved rearward. At this time, a second spring which biases the shock-absorbing member forward and is prevented from being stretched forward by the shock-absorbing member, is contacted with the bumper stay via a support plate. Accordingly, the second spring secondarily absorbs the impact energy while being more compressed by the bumper stay which continuously moves rearward after causing the shock-absorbing member to fully pivot to its received position.
