Optical ear infection treatment device and method

Optical ear infection treatment device and methods are described where an LED and optical light pipe are used to deliver the light from the LED to the middle ear of a patient to reduce bacterial growth and / or eliminate bacteria. Typically, the device is placed in the ear and then activated by the user by pressing an activation button. Once activated the control electronics will turn on the LED and perform a treatment. The most basic treatment mode comprises turning on the LED at maximum power for a predetermined period, e.g. 30 minutes, 60 minutes. When the preset duration is completed, the device will notify the user by an audible beep or vibration that the treatment is complete. Once completed, the user can remove the device, the treatment could be repeated once a day or for extreme cases multiple times during the day.

Device for measuring and analysing the colour of the outer ear and ear canal

ActiveUS20110152621A1Simple and immediate diagnosisSimplify the diagnostic processBronchoscopesLaryngoscopesOtoscopeMedicine
The present application concerns a device for measurement and analysis of the middle ear and ear channel colour for the diagnosis of ear infections. The device is composed of a otoscope (1), including two optical fibers (2a and 2b): one for ear illumination and another returning the reflected light. The electronic unit (3) can change linearly the power of emitted light, as well as, its colour. The received light is also independently measured, enabling the determination of changes on colour and texture associated with the ear inflammations. Command buttons in the otoscope handler (4) enable the user to save the values of the three colour components. The combined value of the components is shown in the digital display (5) of the electronic unit, as well as, by a set of LEDs (6) green, yellow and red that gives a diagnosis in a simple and immediate way. The otoscope allows, simultaneously, directly ear view through a magnifying glass (7) applied in the head of the otoscope, with a standard white light. This device is also useful in food industry.

Inclined pulmonary-assisting mattress for infants and children

InactiveUS9370261B1Easy to cleanLess adverse impactCradleSeating furnitureRefluxEntrapment
An inclined pulmonary-assisting mattress with a profile assisting infants and small children with respiratory problems and other adverse medical conditions, including asthma, wheezing, colic, SIDS, ear infections, and acid reflux. It can be used with a crib, bassinette, or other defined infant sleeping area, as long as it appropriately fills that sleeping area to eliminate all injury, entrapment, or breathing obstruction risk for the child using it. The mattress is not used on top of a crib mattress, but instead replaces a crib mattress until the child recovers or outgrows the breathing difficulty or adverse medical condition. At such time, the inclined pulmonary-assisting mattress is removed and the child is allowed to sleep on a regular crib mattress or other substantially horizontal surface. Intended applications include, but are not limited to, use in hospital neo-natal units, children's nurseries, and by parents of infants suffering from breathing or digestive issues.

Combined otic and medication dispenser and method for treating otic infections

A method of treating a mammal presenting with an otic infection attributable to a pathogenic bacteria is accomplished by passing a hollow shaft having a first and second end through the tympanum of the mammal. The first end is sufficient to pierce the tympanic membrane, but flexible enough such that it buckles under the force necessary to damage any surrounding tissues in the tympanic cavity. The first end of the hollow shaft, after it pierces the tympanic membrane, extends into the tympanic cavity to aspirate a volume of effluence contained therein. The aspirated effluence is expelled out the second end of the hollow shaft. A volume of medicament (less than the volume of effluence withdrawn) is then injected through the same hollow shaft and into the tympanic cavity to treat the infection.

Use of hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes to dissolve biofilm in ears

InactiveUS20100209411A1Prevent and inhibit inflammationAntibacterial agentsOrganic active ingredientsAdditive ingredientProtein molecules
A composition for removal of biofilm in the ears is useful for the treatment of ear infections such as otitis media, particularly those infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In general, the composition comprises: (1) a quantity of at least one enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of a bond that connects two monosaccharides in a polysaccharide or that connects a monosaccharide with a protein molecule in a glycoprotein sufficient to break down biofilm in the ear; and (2) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier suitable for administration into the ear canal. The composition can further include ingredients such as a steroid, lysozyme, lactoferrin, or a peroxidase; if a peroxidase is included, the composition can further include an oxidase to generate peroxide as well as a substrate for the oxidase. The composition can be used in methods for treatment of an ear infection based on the ability of the composition to dissolve biofilm in the ear.
