Method of forming a perimeter weighted foundation for wind turbines and the like

InactiveUS7155875B2Increases the foundation's resistance to an overturning momentIncreased compressive loadWind motor supports/mountsBuilding repairsWind forceTurbine
A perimeter weighted foundation has a central pier pedestal and an enlarged base spaced outwardly and extending below the pedestal. The enlarged base includes an outer concentric perimeter wall section with a radially extending, disk-shaped spread section interconnecting the bottom of the pedestal section and the top of the perimeter wall section. The pedestal section includes vertically extending post-tensioning anchor bolts sleeved through substantially the entire height of the cylindrical pedestal in accordance with earlier U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,586,417 and 5,826,387 and the spread section includes two layers of similarly sleeved post-tensioning bolts which extend through the bottom of the pedestal section and into or through the top of the perimeter wall section, thus tying together the enlarged base to the pier pedestal. After the concrete is poured, hardened and cured, the vertical bolts of the pedestal section and the radially extending horizontal bolts in the spread section are post-tensioned to impart a heavy unit compressive loading on the concrete in the pier pedestal and enlarged base. After back filling soil onto the spread section and to the interior of the pedestal section, the foundation is able to withstand high upset forces imparted to the foundation by any large structure supported thereon.

Robust, lightweight, low compression height piston and method of construction thereof

A piston for an internal combustion engine and method of construction is provided. The piston has a robust, lightweight monolithic piston body including an upper wall forming a combustion bowl depending radially inwardly from an annular, uppermost combustion surface. An undercrown surface is formed on an underside of the combustion bowl, with at least a portion of the undercrown surface being bounded by diametrically opposite skirt portions, pin bosses and strut portions connecting the skirt portions to the pin bosses. The bounded undercrown surface has an openly exposed surface area, as viewed looking along a central longitudinal axis along which the piston reciprocates, providing an expansive area against which oil being splashed or sprayed can come into direct contact with to enhance cooling the piston while in use. Through channels extending over upper regions of the pin bosses can be provided to further reduce weight and facilitate cooling.

Valve with bi-loading seal

A fluid control valve has at its lower inlet end a bi-loading seal. The seal is generally ring shaped in top view. However, it has a first flexible load section for sealing the stationary disk with respect to the housing and a second load section having an annular insert that in cross-section is hook-shaped to form a bend of more than 90 degrees. The insert can be molded within the resilient body of the seal so that its outer rim is disposed at a circular shoulder that bears against a seal stop of the housing. A high load can thus be applied between the bearing shoulder and seal stop to achieve a tight seal, while a lower load can be applied between the flexible, unrigidified part of the seal and a stationary valve disk.
