Method and apparatus for detecting smoke and smothering a fire

A fire in an enclosed space in an aircraft is, for example, visually detected early since smoke generated by a beginning fire is initially permitted to escape from the enclosed space. The enclosed space is, for example, an overhead luggage bin or a goods container holding food or freight. The smoke can pass through a flow passage either in the form of a gap or a leak between a lid and walls, or between a door and a door frame, or between walls and other walls joined together. Intumescent material is installed along the gaps or leaks and expands into the gaps or leaks when the fire has generated a temperature sufficient for causing the expansion of the intumescent material. Preferably a guide surface assures that the intumescent material expands into the gaps and leaks and cannot expand away from gaps and leaks.

A system for extinguishing and suppressing a fire in an enclosed space includes a Halon storage container and a nitrogen generator that are both connected by a duct system to extinguishing nozzles arranged in the enclosed space. Halon is supplied as a first extinguishing agent from the container to achieve a rapid initial extinguishing of the fire. Nitrogen enriched air is supplied as a second extinguishing agent from the nitrogen generator to achieve a continuous long-term fire suppression, commencing simultaneously with or after the introduction of the Halon. The nitrogen generator may include a molecular sieve to continuously generate the nitrogen enriched air from an inlet flow of environmental air.

Oxygen/inert gas generator

A gas generation method and apparatus, capable of use in an aircraft, generates oxygen with at least one On Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) and generates an inert gas with at least one On Board Inert Gas Generating System (OBIGGS) and selectively supplies an auxiliary supply of inert gas utilizing a waste gas output of the at least one OBOGS. The inert gas can include nitrogen. An auxiliary source of oxygen can also be provided. Control valves can be used to selectively supply the waste gas output of the at least one OBOGS to the atmosphere or to either of two locations. The oxygen can be used in a passenger compartment of the aircraft and the inert gas used in either a fuel tank or cargo bay of the aircraft.

Seating arrangement for a passenger airplane

InactiveUS20070241235A1Increases the seat pitch, or the horizontal legroomSeating arrangementsEmergency apparatusBack restsEngineering
Modified airplane seating comprises a typical row of standard economy-class airplane seats that include a raised middle seat with dedicated armrests with aisle or window seats on each side of the middle seat forming a staggered configuration. The raised middle seat comprises of a seat back portion, seat portion, and armrests. The height of the seat of the middle seat is higher than the standard economy-class seat. The armrest provides dedicated armrest for both the raised middle seat and the end or window seats. The middle seat and end or window seats, usually configured in a straight row in the economy-class section of an airplane, is in a staggered configuration with the middle seat is moved slightly forward of the seats beside it.

Personal cabin pressure monitor and warning system

A cabin pressure altitude monitor and warning system provides a warning when a detected cabin pressure altitude has reached a predetermined level. The system is preferably embodied in a portable, pager-sized device that can be carried or worn by an individual. A microprocessor calculates the pressure altitude from signals generated by a calibrated pressure transducer and a temperature sensor that compensates for temperature variations in the signals generated by the pressure transducer. The microprocessor is programmed to generate a warning or alarm if a cabin pressure altitude exceeding a predetermined threshold is detected. Preferably, the microprocessor generates two different types of warning or alarm outputs, a first early warning or alert when a first pressure altitude is exceeded, and a second more serious alarm condition when either a second, higher pressure altitude is exceeded, or when the first pressure altitude has been exceeded for a predetermined period of time. Multiple types of alarm condition indicators are preferably provided, including visual, audible and tactile. The system is also preferably designed to detect gas concentrations and other ambient conditions, and thus incorporates other sensors, such as oxygen, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and ammonia sensors, to provide a more complete characterization and monitoring of the local environment.

Articulating passenger seat

A passenger seat, having a seat back, and a seat bottom, including a seat pan, supported by a frame mounted on laterally spaced-apart legs for being mounted to the deck of the aircraft by track fittings. A seat back frame assembly and a seat bottom assembly are joined for articulating movement such that when the seat back is reclined, the seat pan is shifted forward and the forward end of the seat pan and thus the seat bottom is raised in order to maintain an appropriate passenger seating angle.
