Remote camera relay controller method and apparatus

A remote camera relay method and apparatus for remotely operating a self-contained, unattended digital camera over a communications link. Format conversion means are included for transparently relaying control signals and remote image data between a local host processor and the remotely located digital camera, independently of specific camera command and image protocols. It thereby functions as a universal remote image transmission adapter, operable as an attachment for use with self-contained digital cameras. A portable enclosure is provided for accommodating the remote relay communications and control electronics and for attaching a hand-held digital camera thereto. Further means are included for remotely actuating the pan and tilt orientation of the camera in accordance with field-of-view selection commands. Data rate conversion and error correction coding are included for providing reliable, low power image forwarding. The communications channel could be a dial-up telephone system, a network connection, modem, an infra-red link or a wireless RF link, for example. Additional control means are provided for remotely selecting the camera field of view for image capture, and includes the ability to access only those subsets of image scenes for which viewing permissions are authorized. A further mode of operation includes protocol training whereby host photographing commands are captured by the remote relay invention during on-line operation, then replayed at programmed times resulting in automatic scheduled remote image capture. Power management is provided for maximizing operating time when used in low power, portable, battery operation.

A method and system for time-motion compensation for use with head mounted displays is disclosed. According to the method, a remote camera captures an image for display on a head-mounted display (HMD) including a viewing window. The image and camera position data is transmitted to a system including the HMD for display to a wearer of the HMD. The HMD position is determined. An offset between the HMD position and a known position of the HMD is determined as is an offset between the camera position and a known position of the camera. The image is offset relative to the viewing window of the image based on the difference between the two determined offsets.

Patient Video and Audio Monitoring System

A user interface and software system and architecture enables linking medical record information and patient location to a camera associated with that location when a particular patient is selected by a clinician using a health information system. The image of the patient as recorded by an in-room camera is displayed within a picture-in-picture display on a large plasma screen located at a command station, for example. The image may be controlled by a remote camera controller employing a Web-based user interface that allows a user to implement a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera controller via mouse control, for example. Information relating to patient location is used to remotely control, via Web-based application, the selection of the appropriate camera and the type of display in which to show the image. The user interface associated with this architecture provides an efficient and intuitive means of selecting specific images and specific display styles. The system operates in a parent-child relationship in which information associated with a parent application (HIS, for instance) is passed to the application architecture, thereby providing a direct, error-free and positive link to the application.

Rendering system and method for images having differing foveal area and peripheral view area resolutions

A client-server arrangement for camera viewing using digital cameras across a computer network. A camera server controls a motorized gimbal which determines the viewing angles of a set of cameras according to signals from a client computer which is equipped with an eye movement tracking system. Movements of the viewer's eyes result in changes in viewing angle of the remote cameras. A high resolution foveal field of view image centered on the user's point of interest is captured and overlaid on a lower resolution full filed of view image, rendering a combined image having a low resolution peripheral area and a high resolution foveal area, and being significantly reduced in size compared to a full resolution, full field of view image. This combined image is transmitted to the client for display to the user.

Remote camera positioner

Apparatus for remotely controlling the positioner of a camera head. At least one hydraulically-actuated positioner for rotating the camera head with respect to an axis is fixed to the camera head and to a camera support device, such as a camera boom. The positioner includes an output shaft whose angular displacement is responsive to fluid flows transmitted through a pair of associated hydraulic lines. A valve is associated with each positioner and controls the flow of fluid within the pair of positioner hydraulic lines. A control unit receives and processes inputs provided by a camera operator (observing the camera's field-of-view on a monitor) and outputs generated by the system so that the necessary adjustments may be controlled by the valves to assume smooth camera movements in either an aquatic environment or otherwise.

Anticipatory image capture for stereoscopic remote viewing with foveal priority

A client-server arrangement for camera viewing using digital cameras across a computer network. A camera server controls a motorized gimbal which determines the viewing angle of a camera, according to signals from a client computer which is equipped with an eye movement tracking system. Movements of the viewer's eyes result in changes in viewing angle of the remote cameras. The original full-resolution image is divided into a foveal area and a peripheral area. Subsequently, if a change in the peripheral area of a field of view is detected relative to the most recently displayed image, the viewing angle of the cameras is changed to center on the detected change, and an image is captured of this anticipated future field of view. When the viewer eventually changes his or her point of interest to the area of detected change, the pre-captured image is transmitted immediately for viewing.

Foveal priority in stereoscopic remote viewing system

A client-server arrangement for camera viewing using digital cameras across a computer network. A camera server controls a motorized gimbal to affect camera viewing angle changes according to signals from a client computer which is equipped with an eye movement tracking system. Movements of the viewer's eyes result in changes in viewing angle of the remote cameras. Prior to transmission, the server divides the original full-resolution image into a foveal area and a peripheral area. The peripheral area data is reduced in resolution, thereby reducing the image data size, required transmission bandwidth, transmission size, and image update latency. Later, the full resolution data from the peripheral area of the image may be transmitted to the client machine so that the full image may be rendered in original full resolution.
