Dynamic flying attitude control using augmented gimbal

A head suspension mounts a head assembly in a disc drive. The head suspension includes controllable bending elements on the gimbal portion of the head suspension which allow dynamic control of the flying attitude of the head assemblies, and thus the flying height. In a first embodiment, the control elements are bi-metal features that utilize differential thermal expansion to control the flying attitude. In a second, and presently preferred, embodiment, the control elements are piezo-electric elements which provide bi-directional control of associated elements of the gimbal portion of the head suspension. In another aspect, the controllable bending elements are used to increase the flying height of the head assembly as the head assembly is moved from the data recording area of the disc into engagement with a textured landing zone.

High molecular weight fractionated lubricant for use with thin film magnetic media

Disclosed is a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant comprising less than about 10 percent PFPE molecules having a molecular weight lower than about 2000 Daltons, and wherein the average molecular weight of the lubricant is greater than about 5000 Daltons. Such a lubricant comprises less than about 15 percent PFPE molecules having a moleuclar weight greater than about 10,000 Daltons. Also disclosed is a thin film magnetic disc comprising a recording surface and a PFPE lubricant in contact with the recording surface. The recording surface of such a thin film magnetic disc can be adapted to magnetically record information via an air bearing read/write head. The recording surface can be smooth. The disc can further comprise a rough-surfaced landing zone inward of the recording surface, wherein the PFPE lubricant is in contact with the landing zone. Also disclosed is a method of lubricating a thin film magnetic disc. The method can comprise applying a narrow, high molecular weight fractionated PFPE lubricant to the disc. In addition, a method of preparing a PFPE lubricant for use with a thin film magnetic disc is disclosed. The method can comprise fractionating a PFPE lubricant to include less than about 10 percent PFPE molecules having a molecular weight lower than about 2000 Daltons. The average molecular weight of such a lubricant after fractionation is greater than about 5000 Daltons.

Wearable Article with Extensible Fastening Member Having Stress Distribution Features and/or Fastening Combination Performance Characteristics, and Method of Testing and Selecting Fastening Combination Performance Characteristics

A wearable article with an extensible fastening member having a fastener proximate its end is disclosed. The fastening member may be highly extensible, and may have construction features and shape characteristics that affect distribution of force components when the fastener is in use, and reduce the chances of buckling or flipping of the fastening member along its edges, and the chances that the edges of the fastener will be lifted away from a surface to which it is attached. The fastener and material forming an accompanying landing zone on the article may be selected to form a fastening combination having performance attributes that provide further resistance to unintended pop-off under wearing conditions.

The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for enabling unmanned and optionally-manned cargo delivery to personnel on the ground. For example, an aircraft may be used to provide rapid response cargo delivery to widely separated small units in demanding and unpredictable conditions that pose unacceptable risks to both ground resupply personnel and aircrew. Together with a ground vehicle, packages from the aircraft may be deployed to ground personnel in disbursed operating locations without exposing the ground personnel to the aircraft's open landing zone.
