859 results about "Gamete" patented technology

A gamete (/ˈɡæmiːt/; from Ancient Greek γαμετή gamete from gamein "to marry") is a haploid cell that fuses with another haploid cell during fertilization in organisms that sexually reproduce. In species that produce two morphologically distinct types of gametes, and in which each individual produces only one type, a female is any individual that produces the larger type of gamete—called an ovum— and a male produces the smaller tadpole-like type—called a sperm. In short a gamete is an egg cell (female gamete) or a sperm (male gamete). This is an example of anisogamy or heterogamy, the condition in which females and males produce gametes of different sizes (this is the case in humans; the human ovum has approximately 100,000 times the volume of a single human sperm cell). In contrast, isogamy is the state of gametes from both sexes being the same size and shape, and given arbitrary designators for mating type. The name gamete was introduced by the Austrian biologist Gregor Mendel. Gametes carry half the genetic information of an individual, one ploidy of each type, and are created through meiosis.

Nucleotide sequences mediating male fertility and method of using same

Nucleotide sequences mediating male fertility in plants are described, with DNA molecule and amino acid sequences set forth. Promoter sequences and their essential regions are also identified. The nucleotide sequences are useful in mediating male fertility in plants. In one such method, the homozygous recessive condition of male sterility causing alleles is maintained after crossing with a second plant, where the second plant contains a restoring transgene construct having a nucleotide sequence which reverses the homozygous condition. The restoring sequence is linked with a hemizygous sequence encoding a product inhibiting formation or function of male gametes. The maintainer plant produces only viable male gametes which do not contain the restoring transgene construct. Increase of the maintainer plant is also provided by self-fertilization, and selection for seed or plants which contain the construct.

Collection systems for cytometer sorting of sperm

Improved flow cytometer system particularly adapted to use for sex-selected sperm sorting include enhanced sheath fluid and other strategies which minimize stress on the sperm cells, including a 2.9 percent sodium citrate sheath solution for bovine species and a hepes bovine gamete media for equine species. Improved collection systems and techniques for the process are described so that commercial applications of sperms samples as well as the resulting animals may be achieved.

Method for preparing male sterile bodies of argopecten irradians

The invention discloses a method for preparing male sterile bodies of argopecten irradians. Argopecten purpuratus which is homogeneous with the argopecten irradians, has the same chromosome number and similar gamete form and size as the argopecten irradians and is androgynous is selected to hybridize with the argopecten irradians so as to prepare male sterile bodies. The testes of the male sterile bodies are gradually substituted by ovaries together with the development of gonads; and when the gonads are mature, the whole gonads are orange red special in female, can only produce ova and cannot produce sperms. The method disclosed by the invention has the advantages of high proportion of sterile bodies, stable technical effect, relative simpleness, easiness for popularization.

Squash hybrid sv0153yl and parents thereof

The invention provides seed and plants of squash hybrid SV0153YL and the parent lines thereof. The invention thus relates to the plants, seeds and tissue cultures of squash hybrid SV0153YL and the parent lines thereof, and to methods for producing a squash plant produced by crossing such plants with themselves or with another squash plant, such as a plant of another genotype. The invention further relates to seeds and plants produced by such crossing. The invention further relates to parts of such plants, including the fruit and gametes of such plants.
