Apparatus and methods for intravascular embolic protection

The present invention provides intravascular embolic protection apparatus including a blood filter element having an accommodating passageway adapted to permit passage of a procedure device therethrough and to substantially seal against passage of particles between the embolic protection apparatus and the procedure device by accommodating to a size and shape of the procedure device. Furthermore, the present invention provides a method of performing an endovascular procedure on a patient including the steps of delivering an embolic protection apparatus to a location within a vascular lumen of the patient; passing a procedure device through an accommodating passageway of the apparatus, the accommodating passageway accommodating to a size and shape of the procedure device; performing the endovascular procedure; and removing the procedure device from the patient.

Apparatus and methods for reducing embolization during treatment of carotid artery disease

Methods and apparatus are provided for removing emboli during an angioplasty, stenting or surgical procedure comprising a catheter having an occlusion element, an aspiration lumen, and a blood outlet port in communication with the lumen, a guide wire having a balloon, a venous return sheath with a blood inlet port, and tubing that couples the blood outlet port to the blood inlet port. Apparatus is also provided for occluding the external carotid artery to prevent reversal of flow into the internal carotid artery. The pressure differential between the artery and the vein provides reverse flow through the artery, thereby flushing emboli. A blood filter may optionally be included in-line with the tubing to filter emboli from blood reperfused into the patient.

Temporary vascular filters

Blood filters (10a, 10b) sized and configured to be positioned within a vascular vessel include a plurality of anchoring arms (22) having a removable sleeve (22-2) for temporarily anchoring the blood filter to a vessel wall. In especially preferred embodiments, the removable sleeve (22-2) is formed of bioabsorbable material. When the filter (10a, 10b) is deployed, it is this removable sleeve (22-2) which comes into contact with the inner tissue wall of the patient's blood vessel (typically the inferior vena cava). When it is desired to remove the filter, endothelization of the sleeve (22-2) has typically occurred but since the sleeves are a removable (separable) component part of the anchoring arms (22), the entire filter device (10a, 10b) can be retrieved thereby leaving the endothelized sleeves (22-2) remaining in place on the interior wall of the patient's vascular vesse. However, such sleeves (22-2) will be absorbed over time (preferably by means of hydrolysis) since they are formed of a bioabsorbable polymeric material. In such a manner, the filters (10a, 10b) of the present invention allow relatively easy retrieval while minimizing (if not preventing entirely) harm to the vascular endothelium.

Embolus blood clot filter removal system and method

A blood filter extraction system for extracting a blood filter from within a blood vessel. The system includes an extraction wire, or plurality of such wires, positioned within an elongated tubular member. A plurality of extraction wires coupled to the distal end of the extraction member each include a hook for engaging filter members. Alternatively, the extraction wires may be one or more wires configured in a helical shape which engage filter members when the extraction member is rotated. The system may also include an elongated tubular member with the distal end having a conical shape. To extract a filter, the extraction wires are then pushed out of the tubular member and into the filter members. The extraction member is then withdrawn or rotated so the wires engage and draw in the filter members, after which the catheter is pushed over the conical portion of the tubular member.

Assembly for the preparation of a medical device having a coating comprising hydrogen peroxide

The present invention provides an assembly for the preparation of a medical device having a porous coating comprising hydrogen peroxide. Particularly interesting medical devices are catheters (such as urinary catheters), endoscopes, laryngoscopes, tubes for feeding, tubes for drainage, guide wires, condoms, urisheaths, barrier coatings e.g. for gloves, stents and other implants, extra corporeal blood conduits, membranes e.g. for dialysis, blood filters, devices for circulatory assistance, dressings for wound care, and ostomy bags. The coating is in particular a hydrophilic coating formed from cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone. In one embodiment, the assembly holds a dry catheter element in one compartment of a package and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution in another compartment. The solution may also comprise stabilizers, e.g. chelators, and osmolality increasing agents. The catheter for insertion in the urethra is useful for the treatment, alleviation or prophylaxis of microbial infections such as urinary tract infections (UTI).

System and Method for Regeneration of a Fluid

A system comprising a blood circuit including a membrane arranged in a blood filter (7) in which blood is in contact with a first side of said membrane; and a dialysis circuit in which a dialysis fluid is in contact with the other side of the membrane for exchange of substances and ions through the membrane as well as water. The dialysis fluid is circulated from a dialysis compartment and through a RO filter (9). The permeate fluid, i.e. water is returned to the dialysis compartment. The retentate fluid from the RO filter (9) passes through a separation filter (13). The retentate fluid is returned to the dialysis compartment and the permeate fluid is removed from the dialysis circuit as a waste fluid to a receptacle (19). The retentate fluid is concentrated in the RO filter in a ration of at least 3:1.

Blood filters, blood collection and processing systems, and methods therefore

A blood collection system has a container for holding blood and a filter communicating with the container, mutually arranged for handling as a unit. The filter (20) contains a fibrous filter medium (28) housed within two flexible sheets (32, 34) of plastic. A first seal (36) joins the sheets (32, 34) directly to the filter medium (28) inboard of the peripheral edge (40) of the filter medium (28), and a second seal (38) joins the sheets (32, 34) outboard of the peripheral edge (40) of the filter medium (28). A region (42) of the filter medium (28) extends between the first and second seals (36, 38) to cushion contact with the filter housing during handling.
