Wound retraction apparatus and method

A surgical wound retractor is adapted to dilate a wound stretchable to a desired diameter, the retractor includes a first ring having a diameter treater than that desired for the wound and being adapted for disposition interiorly of the wound. A second ring has a diameter greater than that desired for the wound and is adapted for disposition exteriorly of the wound. A plurality of retraction elements are disposed in a generally cylindrical relationship to each other, between the first ring and the second ring. These elements extend through the wound to exert a radial retraction force on the wound which is dependent on the distance separating the first ring and the second ring. Retraction elements, both distensible and non-distensible are contemplated with appropriate attachment means at the rings to provide for variations in the retraction force. With a suitable retraction sleeve, a third ring can be provided to form a circumferential retainer to vary the retraction force. Rings can also be made inflatable or self-expanding to vary the retraction force. An associated method includes the step of rolling the second ring circumferentially of the third ring to form the circumferential retainer.

Portable traction device with sling

A portable traction device can include a sling that is sized to cradle a user's head primarily at the back and lower part of the skull. The sling can be associated with flexible elastic tethers that are, in turn, associated with an anchor that is positioned a height above the floor when the portable traction device is in use. A tensile force vector between the anchor and the sling allows for cervical traction. The sling can additionally be associated with speakers and / or resonant actuators and can be simplified to increase portability and ease of use.

Nasal breathing training tape and methodfield of the invention

Disclosed is a nasal breathing training tape adapted to impart training to a user to breathe from the nose, and not from the mouth, during sleep time or wakefulness time. The nasal breathing training tape includes a stretchable strip, an adhesive layer, and a cutout portion. The stretchable strip includes a first surface, and a second surface opposite to the first surface. The stretchable strip is stretchable to create tension therein. The adhesive layer may be applied to the second surface of the stretchable strip. The cutout portion is configured on the stretchable strip along a substantially central location of the stretchable strip. The stretchable strip is stretched to a size to be accommodated and stick around a upper and lower lips, surrounding the mouth but not touching the upper and lower lips, of the user, such that the upper and lower lips are held together by the tension created in the stretchable strip.

The visual alert for placement on free-range animals includes active and / or passive lighting to alert motor vehicle drivers of such animals crossing the roadway when traveling through open rangeland. The visual alert is a sleeve having fins extending radially therefrom, the fins having reflective and / or active lighting elements thereon. Power for active lighting is provided by electrical batteries that are recharged during daylight. The permanently installed sleeve may be formed as a circumferentially closed distensible unit that passes over the hoof of the animal, or as an open sheet that is rolled about the leg of the animal and permanently secured by plastic ties or other suitable elements. The sleeve is lined with a non-abrasive material to preclude injury to the animal during long term wear.
