Recording medium, apparatus for forming the recording medium, and apparatus and method for reproducing the recording medium

Disclosed herein are a recording medium, an apparatus for forming the recording medium, and an apparatus and method for reproducing the recording medium. CPI (Copy Protection-related Information), identification information (CPI_Flag) indicative of recording or non-recording of the CPI, and / or a plurality of contents specific information (CSI) with different formats are recorded in a PIC (Permanent Information & Control data) zone of a high-density optical disc such as a BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc-ROM). A formatting operation and mastering operation are performed under the condition that control data including the CPI, CPI_Flag and / or CSI is separated from main data. An optical disc device judges whether the optical disc has been illegally copied, with reference to the CPI, CPI_Flag and / or CSI read from the optical disc, and compulsorily stops a data playback operation upon judging that the disc has been illegally copied. Therefore, it is possible to effectively protect an optical disc from illegal copying, make an accurate and easy distinction between a legally made optical disc and an illegally made optical disc, and restrict reproduction of an illegally made optical disc.

Multimedia search and indexing system and method of operation using audio cues with signal thresholds

A multimedia search and indexing system automatically selects scenes or events of interest from any media, i.e., video, film, sound for replay, in whole or in part, in other contexts. The entire audio track of a recorded event in video, film, sound, etc., is analyzed to determine audio levels within a set of frequency ranges of interest. Audio clip levels within the selected frequency ranges are chosen as audio cues representative of events of interest in the track. The selection criteria are applied to the audio track of the recorded event. An Edit Decision List (EDL) is generated from the analysis of the audio track. The list is representative of scenes or sounds of interest as clips for reuse. The clips are reviewed and accepted or rejected for reuse. Once selected, the clips are edited using industry standard audio and video editing techniques.

Magnetic recording medium, magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus, and stamper for manufacturing magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium includes a servo area that has a preamble area where a magnetic portion and a non-magnetic portion for clock synchronization are formed; and a data area where user data is written into. The magnetic portion is different in an occupancy to the preamble area from the non-magnetic portion.

Digital information recording and reproducing method and apparatus therefor

To solve the problem inhibiting the copyright protection caused by reason that there are no means for restricting the number of backups to other media, which makes it impossible for a copyright owner to specify the allowable number of backups for the content of “Copy One Generation”, disclosed herein is a digital information recording and reproducing method. The method is so configured that: a first piece of digital information and copy control information of the first piece of digital information is received, wherein the copy control information is for controlling the recording of the first piece of digital information on a recording medium; and when the received copy control information is Copy One Generation indicating that only one generation copy of digital information is allowed, a plurality of the first pieces of digital information are recorded on a first recording medium as the first piece of digital information and a second piece of digital information, wherein the first piece of digital information is different in format or in bit rate from the second piece of digital information.

Method of recording media data on a storage medium and method and system for accessing the media data recorded on the storage medium

Management information is embedded by directly controlling media with a date hiding technique. A system which accesses (regenerates or records) media data by using the management information is controlled based on this management information, and according to the contents of the management information, the access to media data is inhibited. Therefore, illegal duplication of data can be prevented, and consequently, works can be effectively protected. More particularly, in a system for accessing media data stored on a storage medium 51, the system comprises means 52 for reading out data from the storage medium, means 56 for specifying an embedding region, in which management information for managing access to the media data was embedded, from the read-out data and for extracting the management information in accordance with a status of the embedding region by referring to an extraction rule where the status of the embedding region is caused to correspond to the contents of data to be extracted, means 60 for generating an access interference signal, and means 59 for selectively outputting either the read-out signal or a signal generated by both the read-out signal and the access interference signal, in accordance with the contents of the management information.

System and method for providing performance-enhanced rebuild of a solid-state drive (SSD) in a solid-state drive hard disk drive (SSD HDD) redundant array of inexpensive disks 1 (RAID 1) pair

The present invention is a method for implementing a storage system. The storage system may include a disk array having a disk drive pair which includes a solid-state disk drive and a hard disk drive. The method may include the step of copying a data subset of a data set from the hard disk drive to a spare solid-state disk drive during a solid-state disk drive rebuild process. The data subset includes a first amount of data and the data set includes a second amount of data, where the first amount of data is less than the second amount of data. The method may further include the step of receiving a read request from a host server requesting the data subset. The method further includes the step of directing the read command to the spare solid-state disk drive. The method may further include the step of, prior to completion of copying of the data set from the hard disk drive to the spare solid-state disk drive, reading the data subset from the spare solid-state disk drive based upon the read command. Further, the disk array may be configured as a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) configuration, such as a Level 1 RAID configuration (RAID 1 configuration) with the disk drive pair being a RAID disk drive pair, such as RAID 1 disk drive pair.

Host protected area (HPA) duplication process

The content of a hard disk drive or the like information storage media that includes content stored in a host protected area (HPA) or reserve area of the hard disk is duplicated using hard disk drive duplicating machinery. The duplication process includes the steps of detecting the presence of a HPA on a source drive, and if detected, generating an HPA are of the same or of a sufficiently accommodating size on the target disk drive. Information from the source HPA drive to the thus created HPA area of the target-drive. The remaining content from the source drive is written to an available section of the target drive. The invention is thereby able to detect whether a source drive has a HPA, create an HPA on the target drive, and to copy the content of the source HPA to the HPA on the target device to ensure a proper duplication of the target drive.
