A fully submersible apparatus for generating electricity from liquid flow as in an ocean or river current. A buoyant structure is fully submersible and has at least one pair of counter-rotating side-by-side motors with a plurality of angularly spaced radial vanes each having a plurality of rotatable subvanes such that current impinging upon the motor will impinge on a closed or solid vane to effect rotation of the motor and its shaft during a first phase of the rotational cycle and will impinge on open vanes for free passage therethrough on the return or second phase of rotation of the motor. Motors may also be provided with vanes in overlying and underlying relationship. An associated method is provided.

A radial exhaust gas turbine apparatus has a gas turbine engine that includes a radial exhaust diffuser section and a casing apparatus consisting essentially of polygonal walls, substantially straight plates, and substantially straight sidewalls. The casing apparatus encloses the radial exhaust diffuser section and is configured to direct at least a substantial portion of the gas exiting the radial exhaust diffuser section to an exit in the casing apparatus via an approximately involute path.

A wind turbine capable of driving multiple electric generators having a ring or shroud structure for reducing blade root bending moments, hub loads, blade fastener loads and pitch bearing loads. The shroud may further incorporate a ring gear for driving an electric generator. In one embodiment, the electric generator may be cantilevered from the nacelle such that the gear on the generator drive shaft is contacted by the ring gear of the shroud. The shroud also provides protection for the gearing and aids in preventing gear lubricant contamination.

A fan arrangement comprises a fan (10) having a fan housing (30) within which is arranged a blower wheel (18) which, in operation, moves air from an intake side of the fan (10) to a delivery side. Arranged radially outside the fan housing (30) is a surrounding mounting frame (34) that serves to support the fan housing (30). A membrane (32), made of an elastic material, elastically connects the fan housing (30) and mounting frame (34) to one another and is formed with through holes or apertures (33) that, in the event of a closure of the output or delivery side of the fan arrangement (40), enable a return flow, from the delivery side to the intake side of the fan arrangement (40), of air moved by the blower wheel (18).

A bladeless fan assembly for creating an air current includes a nozzle mounted on a base. The nozzle comprises an interior passage and a mouth for receiving the air flow from the interior passage and through which the air flow is emitted from the fan assembly. The nozzle defines an opening through which air from outside the fan assembly is drawn by the air flow emitted from the mouth. The nozzle is detachable from the base, which is preferably sized to be accommodated within the opening of the nozzle for transportation.

Due to variations arising during manufacturing, axial fans often are slightly imbalanced, resulting in noise during operation, which is undesirable in many contexts, for example when the fan is used for ventilation purposes in a motor vehicle. A fan with improved vibration and noise damping can be achieved by elastically suspending the fan wheel within a first ring formed of a hard plastic, the first ring having a tubular extension formed of a softer plastic, and serving to mechanically connect the first ring to a surrounding annular carrier part. Optionally, the first ring and extension unit can include a spring element. Preferably, the first ring and tubular extension are produced by a multi-component forming technology such as two-plastic technology. The fan is preferably driven by an electronically commutated motor (ECM).

A turbine frame assembly for a gas turbine engine includes: (a) a turbine frame including: (i) an outer ring; (ii) a hub; (ii) a plurality of struts extending between the hub and the outer ring; (b) a two-piece strut fairing surrounding each of the struts, including: (i) an inner band; (ii) an outer band; and (iii) an airfoil-shaped vane extending between the inner and outer bands; (d) a plurality of nozzle segments disposed between the outer ring and the hub, each nozzle segment being an integral metallic casting including: (i) an arcuate outer band; (ii) an arcuate inner band; and (ii) an airfoil-shaped vane.

An airfoil and method of fabricating an airfoil including a first and a second side coupled together at a leading and a trailing edge and extending there between. A bladeless fan assembly includes a nozzle mounted on a base housing a motor and an impeller driven by the motor for creating an air flow. The nozzle includes an interior passage for receiving the air flow, a mouth for emitting the air flow, and a plurality of stationary guide vanes located within the interior passage and each for directing a portion of the air flow towards the mouth. The nozzle defines an opening through which air from outside the fan assembly is drawn by the air flow emitted from the mouth.

A method of manufacturing a composite structure uses a layer of an insulating material (22) as a mold for forming a substrate of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material (24). The insulating material may be formed in the shape of a cylinder (10) with the CMC material wound on an outer surface (14) of the cylinder to form a gas turbine combustor liner (20). Alternatively, the insulating material may be formed in the shape of an airfoil section (32) with the CMC material formed on an inside surface (36) of the insulating material. The airfoil section may be formed of a plurality of halves (42, 44) to facilitate the lay-up of the CMC material onto an easily accessible surface, with the halves then joined together to form the complete composite airfoil. In another embodiment, a box structure (102) defining a hot gas flow passage (98) is manufactured by forming insulating material in the shape of opposed airfoil halves (104) joined at respective opposed ends by platform members (109). A layer of CMC material (107) is then formed on an outside surface of the insulating material. A number of such composite material box structures are then joined together to form a vane ring (100) for a gas turbine engine.

A stator assembly for a rotary machine having a shroud for a stator vane is disclosed. Various construction details are developed which limit movement of the stator vane into the flowpath by reason of the stator vane being restrained by the shroud. In one particular embodiment, a clip member extends through an opening in the tip of the vane and is disposed at a location adjacent a nonflowpath surface of the shroud to restrain the tip of the vane against inward movement through the shroud.

A pedestal for a fan assembly includes a telescopic duct for conveying an air flow to an outlet of the fan assembly.
