Weatherproof sheets for copying, printing and writing and methods related thereto

Weatherproof sheets, suitable for conventional printing, writing, photocopying, and laser printing, are prepared by impregnantly coating a cellulosic substrate on at least one side with a durable weatherproofing composition that is water-based. The composition that is used for general-purpose weatherproof sheets comprises a styrenic acrylic copolymer, a wax, a filler for blocking resistance, a filler for tooth, and a pigment. The preparation of all-purpose weatherproof sheets, usable in photocopiers and laser printers, is made possible by substantially omitting calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide from the composition. The weatherproof sheets resist falling apart, remain legible, and can be written upon when wet. They are also non-yellowing, biodegradable and recylclable. Also, disclosed are methods for making the weatherproof sheets, as well as weatherproof sheets made by those methods.

The invention describes a color-developing composition that contains at least three major components: (1) a leuco dye or a combination of leuco dyes, (2) an color-developer or a combination of color-developers that can form colored complexes with the leuco dyes, and (3) a desensitizer to temporarily remove the effect of the developer so the leuco dye appears in its colorless form. An optional binder may be included so that the composition may be applied to a substrate as an ink. The ink composition may be applied to synthetic polymeric substrates and other substrates that are incorporated into absorbent articles or personal care products.

The light and dark regions may also be overlaid with a plurality of light and dark streaks or stripes. The light and dark regions may be placed adjacent to one another to contrast with each other and to mimic the natural play of light and shadow found in nature.

The invention provides a breath testing device which includes a visual indicating agent which changes color in the presence of an odor associated with bad breath, such as sulfur and ammonia odors. An example of the visual indicating agent is 4,4′-bis(dimethylamino)-benzhydrol (Michler's hydrol or BDMB) and related dyes having a similar chemical structure. The indicating agent is applied to a substrate which is then inserted into a tube or straw, or which covers one end of a straw. When a user with bad breath blows into the tube or straw, the indicating agent will change color. The breath testing devices provide a quick and affordable means for a user to test their breath, and they may be packaged in discreet, pocket-sized dispensers which can be carried in a pocket or purse.

Multilayered color compositions and associated methods

A layered image-forming composite can include a substrate having a background color layer and a color-forming layer applied thereon. The color-forming layer includes a leuco dye that can be developed upon exposure to energy to produce a developed color. The background layer and the color-forming layer can each contribute to the overall appearance of the composite either before and / or after development of the leuco dye. In one aspect, the color-forming layer can have a thickness sufficiently thin to allow a portion of the fixed background color to be visible through a developed portion of the color-forming layer. Optionally, the color-forming layer can be applied in a filter pattern, e.g., halftone, moire, stochastic, etc. in order to provide unique visual effects to the layered composite.
