An autonomous down hole survey tool and method for determining deviation angles of a well bore while tripping. The instrument package assembly is carried in a commercially available running gear and utilizes a low voltage solid state electronic apparatus in cooperation with a method for detecting and correlating desired measurements such as pitch, roll, azimuth and temperature taken from a bored hole in an autonomous manner and electronically recovering such data from the instrument upon its return to the surface. The apparatus includes electronic measurement sensing circuitry that includes a compass/magnetometer utilizing a tilt compensated linear/compass, dual axis tilt system, housed in a high tensile strength non-metallic casing sleeve with a self centering capability. The system further includes electronic communications programming and retrieval cabling and a portable computer processor unit. The method of operation includes the steps of providing the autonomous instrument with an onboard computer/program set for acquiring a plurality of desired duplicate measurements taken from the borehole at pretimed intervals, storing a plurality of such measurements taken along the borehole path with their associated time marks stored in memory, and providing a method for manually inserting depths into a surface computer coordinated with the down hole timed intervals.

A well survey system comprising an electronic survey tool for determining the inclination of a wellbore is disclosed herein with methods of use. In some embodiments, the electronic survey tool includes an electrolytic tilt sensor adapted to measure a first tilt angle within a first plane and a second tilt angle within a second plane of the electrolytic tilt sensor. The electronic survey tool also includes a system processor for determining the inclination of the wellbore based on the first and second tilt angles. As such, a drop-in replacement and improvement on a mechanical critical vertical drift (CVD) tool is provided herein. The electronic survey tool of the present invention also improves upon and overcomes the disadvantages of prior art electronic survey tools. Due to the stability of the improved survey tool over time and with changes in ambient temperature, for example, the improved survey tool does not require periodic recalibration or correction of measurements for errors and biases.

A survey tool for use in a wellbore includes a downhole portion having an axis. The downhole portion is adapted to move within the wellbore with the axis generally parallel to the wellbore. The survey tool further includes a first acceleration sensor mounted at a first position within the downhole portion. The first acceleration sensor is adapted to generate a first signal indicative of an acceleration of the first acceleration sensor along the axis. The survey tool further includes a second acceleration sensor mounted at a second position within the downhole portion. The second position is spaced from the first position by a non-zero distance along the axis. The second acceleration sensor is adapted to generate a second signal indicative of an acceleration of the second acceleration sensor along the axis. The survey tool further includes a controller adapted to receive the first signal and the second signal and to calculate a depth, a velocity, or both a depth and a velocity of the downhole portion in response to the first signal and the second signal.

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, program product and methods to detect crack-like features in pipeline welds using magnetic flux leakage data and pattern recognition. A screening process, for example, does not affect or change how survey data is recorded in survey tools; only how it is analyzed after the survey data is completed.
